UK Artist

UK ARTIST: TAIO CRUZ – WHAT IS YOUR BEEF WITH THE BLACK WOMAN?

UK singing sensation Taio Cruz is a very talented vocalist, song writer and musician. He is definitely doing his thing here in the UK and overseas. I respect the man’s hustle. However I would like to ask Taio one question. What have you got against black women? Taio has released a succession of music videos over the past three years and has NEVER cast a black actress/model to play his love interest. Not even the light skin sistah’s with light eyes and hair down to the centre of their backs get a look in. Is this []

UK MUSIC: CHIPMUNK FT LOUIK ESSIEN – ‘BEAST’

I support Chipmunk. He’s young (17), fresh, focused, seems to have a good head on his shoulders, and his music doesn’t sound half bad. You can tell that the North London based emcee puts some thought in to creating a track before subjecting it to an unsuspecting audience. Unlike some that I could mention, who insist on continuing to contaminate the UK Scene with piss poor rhymes, piss poor flows, piss poor production and piss poor music promos.     Louik Essien is a gifted vocalist, so why is he attempting to channel in Lil Wayne/T-Pain on this track? Your thoughts []

UK MUSIC/VIDEO: GIGGS – ‘UMMM’

Loyal reader The Real NV said something the other day that got me thinking. He said I should give UK rapper and BET Best UK Hip Hop winner Giggs “a chance”, after I posted a clip of him in the studio recording a track, and then promptly went on to slate the rapper. After some thought I decided that perhaps I was being overly critical and not being fair to the South London based emcee.  NV was right, I needed to give the man a chance. Us South Londoners should support each other. []

VIDEO: ESTELLE FT SEAN PAUL – ‘COME OVER’

Estelle seems a lot more confident in front of the camera these days, playing the seductress while wearing ultra high heels and fitted designer outfits. Anyway in this video collaborator Sean Paul plays her lover and it gets a little steamy. There is actually some good sexual chemistry there. The track ‘Come Over’ taken from Estelle’s latest album ‘Shine’, is a slow old skool flavoured reggae track. I still don’t think Estelle’s a great singing talent (she’s a rapper), but I enjoyed the track none the less. Your thoughts please……

VIDEO: ALESHA DIXON – ‘THE BOY DOES NOTHING’

You all know my feelings when it comes to this track.  Now check out the video….. Like I said in a previous post, I have nothing against the woman but I’m sorry Alesha just needs to throw in the towel when it comes to making music! Her label clearly has money to burn even in these desperate times. I mean what was Asylum Records thinking when they signed her? ‘Oh she won ‘Celebrity Come Dancing’ so she’s bound to sell records now’. Err NEWSFLASH it []

UK HIP HOP FLASH BACK: THE COOKIE CREW – ‘ I GOT TO KEEP ON’

I’m not sure if my US based visitor’s will remember this duo, but I’m sure some of my UK visitors will. Female Hip Hop duo The Cookie Crew hailed from Clapham South West London, and were pretty big back in the late 80s. They also enjoyed some success Stateside.   Check out their 1989 hit ‘I Got To Keep On’ I wonder where they are now……

QUOTE OF THE DAY: HILARY MWELWA (HILL ST. SOUL)

Does the resurgence of White female soul singers in England, such as Amy Winehouse and Adele, have a positive or negative effect on a Black female soul artist from the U.K.?  “I think it has a negative effect. At the end of the day, if you’re talented at what you do then you’re entitled to have that kind of stage or shine, but what I’m noticing is that people like the Amy Winehouses and the Adeles get a bigger push from labels. UK MUSIC/VIDEO: KANO – ‘HUSTLER’

When I first heard Kano perform this track at the 02 Wireless Festival back in July, I thought to myself, now he has to release this as a single. I love it. As some of you already know I’m not the biggest UK Hip Hop/Grime fan, but there are a few artists here that I have time for, and Kano is definitely one of them. [Thanks for sending link Versetti] Your thoughts please…..

NO iTUNES, NO US HITS FOR ESTELLE

British R&B star Estelle has seen her single American Boy plummet down the US chart after her latest album, Shine, was taken off iTunes in the States. Record label Warner made the move to force fans to buy the whole album, not just individual songs, reports said. American Boy, featuring Kanye West, was UK number one for a month in March. It was in the iTunes top 10 in the US before its removal. It was also at 11 on the official []
