Singer Lauryn Hill admitted in court today that she failed to file three years of taxes on income of $1.8 million. The star now faces a 3 year prison term and $75,000 in fines and will be sentenced in late November.
However Hill’s attorney Nathan Hockman claims that the federal government is making an example of his client because of her celebrity status. According to Hockman,
“There are many people in society who fail to file their taxes on time who only face civil liability. They chose Ms. Hill in particular because of who she was.”
Earlier this month Hill explained on her website why she failed to pay her taxes. She wrote,
“Over-commercialization and its resulting restrictions and limitations can be very damaging and distorting to the inherent nature of the individual.
“I did not deliberately abandon my fans, nor did I deliberately abandon any responsibilities, but I did however put my safety, health and freedom and the freedom, safety and health of my family first over all other material concerns! I also embraced my right to resist a system intentionally opposing my right to whole and integral survival.”
Oh Lauryn…. 😦
