UK NEWS: RAPPER SPEECH DEBELLE WINS MERCURY MUSIC PRIZE

This news surprised me. I didn’t think she would win. Via BBC News Rapper Speech Debelle is the surprise winner of the Mercury Prize for the best British album of the past year. Her debut Speech Therapy, released last month, has not appeared in the UK album chart but sales will get a huge boost from her win. BBC News Jack Tweed, the widower of reality television star Jade Goody, has been charged with rape. The 22-year-old was charged with one count of rape over an alleged attack at an address in Redbridge, Essex, a Metropolitan Police spokesman said. Via BBC News A former BBC television presenter who hit a teenager with a wooden pole in a fight outside a West Midlands bar has been jailed for two years. Ashley Blake was found guilty of wounding Greg Jones, 17, and intending to pervert the course of justice. Blake, 40, who presented Midlands Today, was sacked following his conviction at Birmingham Crown Court. He had denied the attack outside The Place 2B restaurant in Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham. Via BBC News A former member of the British National Party has been fined £200 after admitting publishing the details of some 10,000 party members online. Matthew Single, 37, formerly of Church Lane, Brinsley, Notts, was fined by Nottingham magistrates after admitting disclosing data without consent. The names, addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses of some party supporters were leaked in November. Judge John Stobart said the fine was “low” because Single was on benefits.   Independent education foundation Edge is touring the country to hear what young people have to say about education.   The week long road show kicks off in Bristol with stops including London and Manchester.  Students are invited come down and share their views on what they feel needs to change in schools, along with subjects they’d most like to study.
