UK NEWS: RAPPER SPEECH DEBELLE WINS MERCURY MUSIC PRIZE
This news surprised me. I didn’t think she would win. Via BBC News Rapper Speech Debelle is the surprise winner of the Mercury Prize for the best British album of the past year. Her debut Speech Therapy, released last month, has not appeared in the UK album chart but sales will get a huge boost from her win. CASTER SEMENYA TO KEEP GOLD MEDAL
Via BBC News Caster Semenya will not be stripped of her World Championships 800m gold medal whatever the outcome of her gender test results, BBC Sport understands. MOVIE TRAILER: ‘PRECIOUS’
Based on the novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire, critically acclaimed film ‘Precious’ starring Mo’Nique, Paula Patton, Gabourey Sidibe, Lenny Kravitz and Mariah Carey will be released across America on the 6th November (no word on a UK release date yet). Directed by Lee Daniels, the Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry backed film is also receiving some Oscar buzz.
MAKE-OVER FOR SOUTH AFRICAN GENDER ROW CHAMPION
Via BBC News South African runner Caster Semenya, whose gender was queried by athletics officials, has defended her looks and taken part in a makeover in a magazine. Ms Semenya, the 800m world champion, posed for the cover of South Africa’s You magazine. “I am who I am and I am proud of myself,” the 18-year-old said. “I’d like to dress up more often and wear dresses but I never get the chance,” she said as she was photographed in several outfits. The single I Got Soul has been recorded to raise money for the charity War Child and features Tinchy Stryder, N-dubz, Pixie Lott, Kid British, V V Brown, amongst others. UK artist Bashy Via The independent Bowing to pressure from a growing coalition of race activists and urban music stars, the Metropolitan Police today agreed to revise a controversial method of monitoring gigs which critics have labelled “potentially racist”. BBC News Jack Tweed, the widower of reality television star Jade Goody, has been charged with rape. The 22-year-old was charged with one count of rape over an alleged attack at an address in Redbridge, Essex, a Metropolitan Police spokesman said.
