QUOTE OF THE DAY: COLOURFUL RADIO FOUNDER KOFI KUSITOR – THE FUTURE OF ETHNIC MEDIA IN BRITAIN

So much has happened over the last couple of weeks within the world of UK radio, and since the major shake up over at Global towers questions are now being asked.

In an interview with The Voice which discusses the demise of Choice FM (now Capital Xtra) and the future of our other publishers and broadcasters (Read full article – Is Ethnic Media Becoming An Endangered Species?), the founder of Colourful Radio (Britain’s only legal and fully-licensed news and music station for the African and African Caribbean community) Kofi Kusitor said,

“As a business it means we are getting more calls than we ever have done in terms of advertising but it’s a negative because it reinforces that the African Caribbean business is not valued enough. My view is that as a community we are partly to blame.

“We have been in this country for God knows how long and are still struggling. The Polish, for example, came yesterday and already have their own radio stations and television stations.

We thought we had Choice when we didn’t and now we’re crying after Choice – it was sold a decade ago. We need to be focusing on building and supporting our own industry. We can’t always be pirates, we have to move on, we have to move up. Where are the investors in our community?”

“If we enlist outside support, they come in and call the shots. It becomes their business. They paid for it.”

The idea of an ethnic media forum had been attempted several times, but failed to get off the ground. It has not worked, partly because we don’t even have the resources to be able to leave the office because we are so hands on. We really need investors inside the community to show their faces as well as getting advertisers to see our market as viable and that means creating more research to support that.”

“We’ve had instances where advertising agencies have turned us away but when you go to the client, more often than not, it’s a different story. We bring them the audience they are looking for. We need to do an undercover investigation and I bet that would confirm what I’m saying.”

This is what I keep on telling people!

The now defunct Ethnic Media group who published the New Nation and Asian weekly newspaper Eastern Eye, sold Eastern Eye to the Asian Media & Marketing Group (which publishes a string of magazines aimed at Britain’s Asian communities) . The newspaper would have folded had the Asian Media & Marketing Group not come to its rescue. The move ensured that the Asian community still retained ownership of Eastern Eye and it is still supported and sitting comfortably on shop shelves today.

But no organisation from within the African and African Caribbean community  stepped in to rescue the New Nation and it now lies somewhere in an unmarked grave.

Anyway…

Colourful Radio is a station that does a BRILLIANT job of catering to the African and African-Caribbean audience. SUPPORT SUPPORT SUPPORT.

  1. He’s right. I used to go out with a Black Brazilian guy. They haven’t been over her in numbers for more than say fifteen years. They have their own newspaper (as do the Spanish speaking Central and South Americans), their own dentists, etc, etc. I say nobody has “joined on” more than the Black community (Specifically those of Caribbean heritage). But as my daughter, who was partly raised in New York says “Y’all to little in numbers to be segregating yourselves as African, Black British, Mixed Race, and West Indian”. She’s convinced that our distrust and badmind of each other is to our detriment. She’s right. No other “ethnics” do themselves over as regularly and consistently as we do, over in the U.K.
