Madonna during a visit in Malawi

Madonna during a visit in Malawi

Well..well..well…. it sounds like Malawi’s “love affair” with Madonna has run its course.

When the multi-millionaire superstar visited the African nation some years ago, adopted two Malawian-born children, spoke of starting a charity (later called ‘Raising Malawi’) and then started to fund the building of schools in the region, the government were quick to roll out the red carpet (like her name was Queen Elizabeth II). But now BBC News reports that government officials have fallen out of love with Madge.

It is claimed that the star complained after she and her entourage were stripped of their VIP status on their way out of the country. The poor things then had to suffer the humiliation of lining up with other passengers at the airport and were frisked by security officials.

On Wednesday a harshly-worded statement was issued by the office of President Joyce Banda accusing Madonna of wanting Malawi “to be forever chained to the obligation of gratitude”.

“Granted, Madonna is a famed international musician. But that does not impose an injunction of obligation on any government under whose territory Madonna finds herself, including Malawi, to give her state treatment. Such treatment, even if she deserved it, is discretionary not obligatory.

It accused her of being “a musician who desperately thinks she must generate recognition by bullying state officials instead of playing decent music on the stage”.

It added: “Among the many things that Madonna needs to learn as a matter of urgency is the decency of telling the truth.

“For her to tell the whole world that she is building schools in Malawi when she has actually only contributed to the construction of classrooms is not compatible with manners of someone who thinks she deserves to be revered with state grandeur.”

In a statement to the BBC, Madonna’s manager Trevor Neilson accused the government of
financial mismanagement of school project funds, and of “harassing organisations
that Raising Malawi has donated to”. Neilson then went on to say, “Madonna is the largest individual philanthropist in Malawi. We will continue to fund programmes that support children in Malawi.”

Who didn’t see this coming?

  1. When white people talk about philanthropy and blacks are the subjects of attention, you better believe that something darker is at work here. Philanthropy is simply another code word for Eugenics.

  2. the same madonna who didnt want to fiil out a form to get 90% reduction in the London congestion zone charge because according to her people were just after her address. mmmm Malawi will be just fine

  3. I am so embarrassed as a Malawian on how Malawians especially her excellency Joyce Banda, is criticizing Madonna. Malawi is one of the corrupt Country in Southern Africa, Your excellency President Joyce Banda don’t you have other things to focus on other than looking forward to madonna’s next visit to Malawi, so sad your sister was fired because her and other senior people in your government didn’t get a chance to rip her off.

madonna don’t give up on Malawi you’re half Malawian nobody will ever deny you that.

  4. *Blinks* Madonna is half Malawian? Because she adopted 2 children and funded the construction of some classrooms?

    I can’t……. I just can’t……

  5. There must be more to this story.

They sold her those children in return for favours she could not fulfill. That was not a normal adoption process.

  6. I saw the pics earlier of the visit with the 2 children she adopted…David looked very uncomfortable. I truly wonder how they feel about Madonna, being taken away from Malawi and how they feel when they go back.

  7. The president and her sister were promised money so that Madonna can go to the country and play god. This is what happens when thieves fall out.
