Last month former footballer and anti-racism campaigner Paul Elliott (48) dramatically resigned from all his positions within the Football Association after it was revealed he called ex-Charlton player Richard Rufus a “nigger” during an argument over a failed business venture. Click here to read all about it.
According to reports Elliott later insisted that the term was not offensive because both men involved are black.
Anyway today I came across this article written by radio presenter and journalist Dotun Adebayo MBE, which discusses Elliott’s terrible gaffe.

I SHOULD have done it four weeks ago, but I have now deleted Paul Elliott’s number from my contacts. I know it’s harsh, but I had no choice. Following the former Chelsea defender’s black-on-black race rant on former Charlton Athletic defender Richard Rufus, in which he used the ‘n’ word pejoratively, he became persona non grata in my phone book.
What would you have done?
This wasn’t the first time that Elliott had behaved adversely. A month ago at a party that Trevor Phillips hosted in central London, Elliott was acting rather oddly. I thought he overdid the kissing of the hand when I introduced him to my wife, but he cushioned it with assurances that he’s got all her records and that she is the undisputed queen of lovers’ rock and he had always wanted to meet her etc. So I just ‘llowed it.
But then, for some inexplicable reason, he started talking to me in patois and saying “You must tek care of yuh baby mudda… Yuh baby mudda, tek care of her.” Continue Reading…..
Today it has been so quiet in my office that you can hear a pin drop, but that peace and quiet has just been shattered by my loud laughter. I would have loved to have been a guest at Trevor Phillips swanky central London shindig witnessing this exchange go down between Dotun and Paul. And then seeing a look of utter confusion on Dotun’s face when Paul kept saying to him over and over again in Jamaican patois, “yuh must tek care of yuh baby mudda… Yuh baby mudda, tek care of her.”
What on earth is going on here? Why is a 48 year old man of his stature behaving like this? Has he started hanging out with a much younger crowd – the ‘Team UK’ Nandos morning, noon and night crew?
But on a serious note, what a sorry state of affairs. It does sound like Paul is going through a difficult period in his life right now and sadly heading towards suffering some form of a mental breakdown.
Your thoughts please….
