VIDEO: WHAT HAPPENED TO UK R&B SINGERS (JUMP OFF UK DEBATE)

As the UK black music scene develops and begins to find its feet, the debaters attempt to answer the question of R&B singers in the UK or the lack of them. Jade challenges the debaters to name 10 UK R&B singers from the last 15 years.

The debaters were faced with a few of the following questions:
– Can you name 10 credible UK R&B singers from the last 15 years?
– What has happened to R&B in the UK?
– Which artists could potentially put UK R&B back on the map?

….

Your thoughts please….

  1. How embarressing. How can they, for starters, not mention Lemar, Estelle, Ms Dynamite, Jamelia or Mark Morrison.

and number 2 – going in on the young girl for not knowing the original artists who sang Freak Me but then getting the group wrong. SMH SMH SMH

Apart from that good debate, but did they answer the questions?

  2. I agree with Melissa.

That white guy cracks me up, he’s cussing the girl for not knowing Another Level weren’t the first to sing Freak me and then he makes himself look even more like a fool, it weren’t Shai who orignally sang Freak Me it was Silk. Shai sang if I Ever Fall In Love. Man that was comical

There is one person people forgot and that was Lynden David Hall. I don’t know if he would be considered R&B or neo soul but to me he was by far the best. I think alot of exposure of artists went downhill when Touch Magazine went also the Lick show on Base

Nate James, Hinda Hicks (remember her)

  3. @Chico-Rei thanks for the video post, we at Jump Off are now very enlightened! Yes, Snips went in and got it soooo wrong, an error which I am sure he is now somewhere sitting in a corner and crying about (meh!)
Just enjoy the footage. Thanks for watching :@)

  4. @miss lala Jade, has got to be laughing right now, if I was snips I wouldn’t be able to live that down, she’s got her own back without even realizing she has the right to cuss snips with no mercy for a long long time for that schoolboy error after the way he went in on her.

To be honest I had the same reaction, and have ever since Another Level done the cover and went to number 1. I was in school at the time and it was mainly a white school so they didn’t know nothing about Silk or about old skool R&B because it just before it went mainstream. I remember East 17 done the same with Shai’s If I ever fall in love, your natural reaction is to laugh but then you tell them what’s up.

I remember back in the day Truth Hurts done a track called so addictive with Rakim and my friends girlfriend who was younger than him said man I like that new rapper Rakim where’s he from?……………………. his face hit the floor lol

  5. @chico-Rei, yes Jade is indeed laughing her head off. Haven’t heard from Snips, he isn’t even in the country and he always gets cussed out by some of the viewers, he’s used to it and doesn’t care lol.
My point in the debate was that we now have this new age R&B mixed with Pop. Jade said it was R&B with Soul, which to me is the problem. How can you take the “Soul” out of R&B, you do that, then you cant call it R&B. Its just watered down Pop music. The same is happening in Hip Hop, hence the likes of Nicki Minaj being able to write songs like SuperBass and people calling it Hip Hop. I like Nicki Minaj, but I think we all know that isn’t Hip Hop, straight Pop.

  6. Sorry, I meant Jade said it was R&B with Soul back in the day. What she knows to be R&B, is R&B mixed with Pop. That’s the problem right there. Pop music means take the “Soul” out of R&B, that’s why you can have the likes of JLS masking their music as R&B successfully without people so much as batting an eyelid.

  7. I have a question. What is the difference between R&B and Soul or Neo Soul even? This is an honest question because sometimes the lines are a bit blurry. I have my own opinion about this but what do you guys think?

  8. Yes, Schoolboy error indeed. Not one through lack of education, more one of a group name mix up. Two early 90s rnb groups with similar hits out at a similar time. Easily done. I promise ill twitpic my Silk and my Shai albums when im back in London! ;-p
P.S. Yes, Jade has every right to rip me to shit for the next month

  9. And also, I remember we definitely did mention Lynden David Hall in this discussion but for some reason im unsure why it wasnt in the final footage

  10. What is disappointing here is that you have a discussion with people who have zero credibility and who have done very little in the music game. Even the original question is loaded and subjective. Who decides what is ‘credible’ and what is not?. This is a debate for the powerless aimed at the powerless………

  11. DJ Snips :
And also, I remember we definitely did mention Lynden David Hall in this discussion but for some reason im unsure why it wasnt in the final footage

Yeh alot of people get them mixed up because they both had songs covered by pop acts Another Level and East 17.Respect for coming thru and admitting it.

I’m not saying this because he’s dead but I saw Lynden David Hall in concert twice back in the day and both had to be the best concerts I have ever been to, the guy was so underrated it’s untrue.

The only UK R&B singer I can think of in the last 15 years who made a song that blew up in the US is Mark Morrison with return of the mack that went to number one producers still sample that song now. I can’t think of anyone else.

  12. Robert Base :

So because they have done little in the music game they’re not entitled to an opinon?????

  13. @Robert Base thank you for your expertise response. I look forward to seeing your response video, I’m sure your professional and credible opinion will have people throwing money at you in the streets!!
Its nice that we live in a country where we can all share our thoughts and opinions, especially on people who you don’t know.

@Chico-Rei thanks for posing the question. Clearly you “get it!”

Got love for internet gangstas like Robert, haaaaa!!!! SMDH

  14. Karl Nova :
I have a question. What is the difference between R&B and Soul or Neo Soul even? This is an honest question because sometimes the lines are a bit blurry. I have my own opinion about this but what do you guys think?

Karl personally i think Neo soul is jazz influenced. R & B is more disco influenced. In the UK most of what hits the charts is pop influenced, they have always watered down black music for the Uk audience but recently it has been diluted so much that you can no longer recognise the original genre. As Miss LaLa said you have Nicki Minaj & JLS being called hip hop & R&B when they dont make that music anymore.

  15. A bit of a side note, but I was concerned when Omar wasn’t mentioned – he was / is a major influence on the “neo-soul” genre

  16. Does snoop ever get outdated? looool the man can just blend in and still look current. loooooool
