AllHipHop reports that Hip Hop pioneer DJ Kool Herc (real name Clive Campbell) is currently in the hospital suffering from an unknown health condition.

According to Gangstarr’s DJ Premier, Kool Herc’s health is deteriorating and he is in need of financial assistance, because he reportedly doesn’t have health insurance.

Premier revealed on his XM Satellite radio show,

Kool Herc is very sick. For those that know about Hip-Hop, who we call the father of Hip-Hop, Kool Herc, is not doing well. It’s funny how we have a father of a culture that still lives, where as in some cultures they are dead and gone even though they may still be worshipped or reflected on in some kind of way.

Being as though he is the man who set this whole culture off, y’all [the fans] should be willing any type of way you can.”

Premier claims to have spoken to Herc, who revealed that he was in need of financial assistance because he didn’t have medical coverage.

“He’s very sick and has no insurance, uses a metro card to get around, needs to pay his bills so he can get out of the hospital, it’s ill…

This is sad news and I hope DJ Kool Herc pulls through, but DJ Premier’s call to fans for donations irritates me to the core.

Some of the fans are probably in financial dire straits  themselves,  after all we are living in financially difficult times. So why not contact your famous rich peers Premier and while your at it dig in to your own deep pockets? That should sort out the problem within a matter of days.

For those who wish to donate  send your donations to the address below.

I think it’s only fair that the fans receive some more information about this situation if they are going to send donations.  Hopefully sometime this week Herc /a close family member will issue an official statement about his current condition.

So far all we know (via DJ Premier) is that the man is apparently gravely ill and needs financial assistance. No other information has been disclosed. No OFFICIAL statement has been released regarding the state of his health.  One minute it sounds as if he’s at death’s door, the next people are claiming on online forum’s to have spoken to him and say “he sounds well but will be going in to hospital for an operation this week”. It’s all bordering on hearsay.

Before fans send donations to the PO Box address above they have a right to know all the facts first.

Get well soon Herc.

  1. If you are or were a hip-hop fan then you are just as connected to this man as any of the artists are. Your negativity is not needed, as you have no idea who Premier has contacted within the hip-hop artist community in hopes of obtaining a donation. I think the Madnews staff needs to show a little more class here. Donate what you can, anything will help this man more than fake sympathy coupled with indignation.

  2. I have no idea who Premier has contacted within the Hip Hop community for donations? Do you? If so then please feel free to enlighten us.

I don’t believe I am being negative when questioning Premier’s approach to this matter, plus what’s the nature of his illness? Don’t the fans have a right to know more before donating?

However I won’t discourage people from donating if that’s what they want to do, and I wish Herc a speedy recovery.

  3. I’d love to see the wack chumps like Nicki Minaj, Drake, Lil Wayne, Soulja Boy etc that have made millions for thier own gains fund the Godfather’s medical bills.

    Will they?

  4. This brother has been there from day one. But i think it’s very sad that he don’t have health insurance. I know all too well lately how blessed i am to have health care. If i didn’t have it i would probably be dead 2 weeks ago. So i wish him the best.

  5. Yes it is sad obviously. But to be honest, I do think that the wider hip hoop artists community should be shelling out for the resepected Herc not the fans primarily.
We all make choices about how we make our careers, what we invest into our families, homes and savings to get by. Ultimately if people want to contribute, that is their jurisdiction but I don’t think people should be made to feel bad if they think that ppl like Premier that have benefited directly financialy from we the buying public, could front some of the bill…that’s all I’m saying

  6. I totally agree with Miss Mad News. Puffy, Jay Z, Russel Simmons, Lil Wayne and all these other “Moguls” should step up and help the man out. They got the money, don’t they? If i had the loot i would cover ALL his bills. But that’s the bullshit that shows you there is no respect in Hip Hop for the architects and pioneers. Same thing with 1520 Sedgwick Avenue the building where Hip Hop was born. Luckily it got saved but still, where were all these Rap millionaires to help out and save the birthplace of Hip Hop. i will donate money for Kool Herc, althou i don’t have much but i have MUCH respect for the Man that started something that i love and live. Get well soon HERC!

  7. I agree. 50 Cent alone could cover Herc’s bills for the rest of his life. These guys stay giving money to Gucci, Cristal and Jacob the Jeweller but cant give a few dollars to the man who pioneered Hip hop? WTF!

  8. the one part of this message that i didnt like was the part where it says the fans should be willing in any kind of way.. FIRSTLY.. THE ARTISTS SHOULD BE WILLING !!! but that aside of course people should be rallying towards helping kool herc…. but if the artists are not seen to give a damn.. then how can the fans be expected to foot the bill!!!

  9. I’ve contacted my friend J.Cook (temporarily in Harlem, N.Y), ’cause we have no Pay Pal options, here in Serbia. So, he gave some dollars with a note ‘from serbian hip-hop, to kool herc, we wish you good health, and recovery, one love!’
So I’m glad if we helped and I would realy love Hercules (my alltime No.1 hero)to get well.

  10. even if some of the famous marketed rappers were to start a campaign for evryone to donate a dollar that alone would help we cant tell people what to do with their money but this man has paved the way for existing artist today where is the honor? where is the respect for this elder? hip hop is truley dead!
