Betty Boo – ‘Doin The Do’ ( Circa 1990)
Betty Boo (real name Alison Clarkson) started her career with late 80s Hip Hop group The She Rockers. She then became a moderately successful solo act in the early 90s and released numerous singles that reached the Top Ten in the UK chart.
I remember at the height of her fame Betty said that she was once a fan of Salt ‘n’ Pepa, but went off them when they became mainstream and effectively sold out. This in my opinion was absolute rubbish.
I was really young at the time but still remember thinking that Betty had a nerve and was the last person to accuse other acts of going mainstream/selling out. She went from being underground, supporting Public Enemy on their first UK tour with her fellow She Rockers ( and allegedly had a fling with Professor Griff) to releasing music like this….
Derek B – ‘Bad Young Brother’ (Circa 1988)
I wasn’t a Derek B fan, but I vaguely remember there being a lot of hype surrounding him, and he even caught the attention of Chuck D at one point….
808 State ft MC Tunes – ‘The Only Rhymes That Bites’ (Circa 1990)

didnt you try to interview derek b!
Initially he contacted me and wanted to be featured on my former site Write On Point. I was up for it back then but nothing came of it in the end.
Betty Boo writes tunes for The Tweenies now…no joke.
Oh shame!
I just remember her being really mouthy and even as a kid I was thinking you’ve got some nerve. She was like an 80’s Cheryl Cole or Lily Allen – too much talk despite having minimal talent.
“She was like an 80’s Cheryl Cole or Lily Allen – too much talk despite having minimal talent” – perfect analogy!
