  1. The advert had me hooked, looks like channel 4 may have just found a TV show that stars a avarage everyday black person in non-sterotypical situations…lets hope the ratings are strong.

  2. Lol it does show black people it a disgraceful typical way.

Here are the sterotypes:beautiful mixed race girl with real hair, making love to black good looking boyfriend, who cares about her.

A white nan, yet no black nan.

Ugly dark skin woman; obsessed with blonde and pretty beyonce, rocking a jacked up weave, obessing over white and attractive mixed race men who don’t want her.

Behaving like an animal in the bedroom; the classic black femal sterotype.

Blacks living in crappy council estate, working in supermarkest, instead of professional career like law. There are black lawyers who love in houses.

Black woman acting like animalistic savage in classy ‘ white’ upmarket restaurant, alluding to age old sterotype that you cannot take black out.

  3. In America this offensive racist coonery would never get commissioned; black America twittet would shut that down on sight! Black people in the uk don’t know how to fight for our rights. No wonder we are where we are in the uk; a joke!

Let break down the african American females.

Good times – a happy normal black family in a house.

Living single – comedic bunch of black singles

Fresh prince – a rich black lawyer in bel air

Cosby show – need I say more?

A different world – attractive, trendy black students in university.

Tia and tamara – pretty mixed race twins in middle class suburbs

Moesha- an all American college sweetheart

Empire – a hip hop dynasty

Scandal – a black political spin dr

How to get away with murder – a black detective

  4. advert had me hooked, looks like channel 4 may have just found a TV show that stars a avarage everyday black person in non-sterotypical situations…lets hope the ratings are strong.

I was born in London. The average black girl does not live in council block and work in a supermarket. Especially if they are Nigerian, which her character is.

The average black girl does not have jacked up weave and blue contacts.

The average black woman is thirsting off white and mixed race men, who clearly have zero interest in them.

The average black woman would never go to a posh ‘ white ‘ restaurant and act like a savage. Blacks are taught how eat properly.

Gee! How could a black woman allow herself to be mocked like this. Even in Ghana or Nigeria, we would never portray women like this. The woman on african tv shows are not portrayed like this; they are sexy, hot, strong, kick ass and smart. And they speak english; not some ghetto Ebonic savage.

  5. Every single black show in the uk is set on dingy council estate, with blacks acting ghetto while speaking Ebonics.

Fake! I am black and I grew up in a house. I know many blacks who own their own homes. I know blacks who went to private school. There are even nigerian millionaires in the uk.

I have dated black men who have been pilots at British airways and investment bankers. There are black doctors, lawyers and members of parliament. You also have blacks who have real stories, like escaping wars and starting from scratch. Where are there stories?

Nigerian get the highest grades after Asians…so how are they living on tower blocks, working in supermarket? You do know Nigerians own all the african supermarkets and food stores.

Oh, and they are mocking the nigerian church; I bet they won’t do that to Islam, Judaism, Sikh or Hindu religions.

  6. @Biba
My assessment was based on a pre-view, but i was happy to see a “goofy” comedy in the style of programs like Inbetweeners with a Black British lead and a female at that.
But i can see that it has upset you, its a shame we don’t have a lot of programs to show all types of UK Black point of view from silly comedy’s to serious dramas, but things are getting better…slowly.

Also, you have chosen some of the good programs from America, they have been at it for longer than us. But you cannot say that America don’t have a shed load of “coonery” programs to fill a life time (look at the most popular programs out there…house wifes?). when it comes to coonery and stupid sterotypes America wins hands down.

  7. I have just come back from New York and this would never go down there! They could not even hire a makeup artist and hairstylist to do get hair?

Talk about art imitating life. In this show, chewing gum, you have the classic core sterotype: ugly dark skin girls and pretty mixed race girls. The mixed race girl has long real silky hair and western features. She has boyfriend And behaves normal.

The dark skin girl is rocking blonde wig and jacked up weave; she does not have a boyfriend and forces herself onto men, who don’t want her. When she has sex, she acts like wild beast, in contrast to the hot mix race girl.

Now……. Was there not an public incident of a nighclub in the West end, who banned the dark skin black girls, and only wanted mixed race and white girls, cos they are prettier? With this image of black woman in the uk, u can see why nightclubs feel this way

Is it any wonder that all the current ‘ black ‘ actresses from the UK in hollywood are actually mixed race and not black?

When will the UK have the guts to show an attractive, intelligent, sexy, glamorous black couple – yeah I said couple! In professional middle class setting, with real, intricate storylines, which do invole the ends?

  8. I am gonna alert black American and all the african American blogs. To put pressure to get this dropped. I am even gonna write to ebony and essence magazine.

Tired of blacks in the Europe getting down like this! Know why I say Europe? Cos BET has launched a french version And did not hire a single black french person to work there. A black channel with no black host? Why the hell are blacks in Europe/ Uk do so damn weak. Colonial mindset. Asians would never…..
The fight Back begins! Fuck outta here!

  9. Cameron,

We have been in the UK since the end of the war; that was over 50 years ago. blacks came BEFORE the Indians and are marking us on every level.

  10. @Biba
Yep of course we need better representation on TV, no one can doubt that, but you’re cherry picking and glossy eyed view of America V Britian is a bit much. Even American’s themselves complain about a large majority of there shows, and as i said before, America has had more years, more people and more resources to have got a lot more better than were we are at the mo.

P.S are you really telling me ALL the UK actress in Hollywood are mixed race??? …….

  11. @Biba
Thanks for the history lesson…..never knew that before looooooooool.
We do not have many people controlling TV in the UK, most are control is on Web shows.

America has a lot more people controlling what is made on TV……thats why they are a bit more further than us yet they still make some programs with the most silly sterotypes out there. They are still telling jokes about africans in jungles!!!!….

  12. Cameron

I have family in the usa so I am versed. African Americans have been in the us longer, but! They have hundreds of Gerard of slavery, then decades of Jim Crow which oy ended in the 60s. They were not even alleged to sit on buses in the 50s.

Yes; every working black British actress is mixed race. Naomi Harris is the oy black feme and she is 37.

    Natalie Emmanuel
    Thandie newton
    Sophie okonedo
    Carmen egojo
    Ashley madeweke
    Gugu maths raw

Few other new names. Naomi Harris is the only black British actress working.

  13. America has a lot more people controlling what is made on TV……thats why they are a bit more further than us yet they still make some programs with the most silly sterotypes out there. They are still telling jokes about africans in jungles!!!!….

Actually they are not! The 1st black president is half african. Students born africa dominating Ivy League universities; african immigrants are more educated and earn higher living than blacks born in the usa. And they touted rica as the future for trade.

If you really are black ( something tells me you are not) would know that.

No black person would talk about Africans in the jungle, especially as the middle class in africa is one of the fasted growing. Watch nollywood; do they look like they live in jungle?

  14. The reason why all the ‘ black ‘ actresses in hollywood all seem to be mixed race is because hollywood seem them as prettier, classier and marketable. They think dark skin women behave like savages….and with a show like chewing gum..they are not wrong.

  15. @Biba
Yep…everyone has a reletive in America…looool, and we have tons of USA tv to see what is going on.

My final point is, we have a lot more to do in England but comparing us to America or even Ghana and Nigeria is pointless considering how much control those places have over what is on TV.

And yes we know that the world loves a light skin woman over a dark skin actress, we can see that. but still there is a few more black actress out in America that are not all high profile.

P.S. you don’t need to give me a history lesson…..i understand the history looooool.

  16. @Biba
Yes i am black, i am over 30, and have lived in england all my life, i was even given the privalage of reading a book, looking at a map, and i have found out that there is other people oustide of england….i know…i know it was a shock.

But thank you for the history lesson Biba, and as this show has upset you so much, i think you better not watch any other show on Channel 4 or any other American show pre 2014…..you may just pass out. loooooooooool.

Anyhow, good night Biba…i am going to get on a boat and find this country you call Nigera, Ghana….and also going to find this America you talk of with the most perfect TV shows with no sterotypes…..what a time to be alive…..

  17. Cameron,

You should visit Ghana or Nigeria.

    Good night!

Ps: yes, I will be boycotting chewing gum and I don’t think I will be alone.

    Xoxo

  18. Cameron

I have just seen your comment. We do have long way to go, but we don’t seem to be getting started. Ain’t it sad there 2 Asians in David Cameron’s cabinet no black people.

Ain’t it sad that sadiqque khan is mayor candidate, and no black person is running? Also, you keeping talking over power; well, how comes Indians have power? Asians came to the uk after West Indians speaking no english.

Indian shows in the uk, show a realistic, cultural dignified family. Kumar show on bbc 1. I have never seen an Asian girl in the uk stereotyped as animalistic or ghetto.

Name some black British actresses who successful?

  19. @biba well so far it’s been pretty successful but good luck with the boycott

I won’t watch it! I will alert black twitter to spin some negative press. Of course it will be a ratings it. You really think they want to see beautiful educated black wan on tv? No, they like seeing black women embarrass themselves. There reason why scandal could never happen in the uk.

    But, enjoy your show….

  20. @biba I think the person you need to be venting at is the writer and creator and actress Michaela Coel. Let her know what you think. I will continue to enjoy Chewing Gum along with everyone else (black) who has tuned in. But good luck in your mission to get the show removed from E4. Good night. 🙂

  21. @biba well so far it’s been pretty successful but good luck with the boycott

The guardian asked if there could be a British version of scandal, and would British people watch a powerful, glamorous, chic black woman as lead!

Your comment just answered the question which is no. As you have stated; British people enjoy seeing black women, chewing off some white man nose, speaking Ebonics, blood dripping, working in a supermarket.

Living up to the stereotype. As I said …,you have obviously found a show you can relate to. You are proud that this is the current representation of British dark skin woman. Enjoy.

  22. @Biba

Wait…Wait….there is Asian people in England too…..and i thought the Kumars was about a Scottish family??? proper confused now.

any way, got to go. My mate Christopher Columbus has a boat i can get on he said he is going to discover a place called Africa.

    Night Night.

  23. @Biba It sounds like you have been in America 5 minutes and suddenly an expert on all this. Even Americans say they have a long way to go when it comes to how they are depicted on screen. But anyway….your the expert!
