Radio Today reports that Capital Xtra (formally Choice FM) has lost almost half its listeners in London.
The station had 680,000 listeners a year ago when it was operating as Choice, but has reported a drop of 47.4% to 358,000 listeners today in London only.
Competitor BBC 1Xtra has also lost 15.9 per cent of listeners in the last year. The “URBAN” station’s listening figures have dropped below a million for the first time.
BBC 1Xtra faced intense backlash several weeks ago after they compiled a suspect ‘Power List’, citing pop singer Ed Sheeran as the most important artist in black/”urban” music.
Pure foolishness.
Anyway, we all know what tends to happen after mainstream radio stations start to lose listeners.

Capital extra is going in!!!!!!!!!! 23:30 fri 1st aug
Good to hear. I hate both those stations, alot of people I speak to, listen to real black stations on pirates or internet radio
That’s a major drop for Capital Xtra. Its going to be interesting to see how they go about solving the problem. And 1Xtra. Interesting times ahead. I think listeners are definitely tuning in to Internet stations etc that will play the music they want to hear.
