OPRAH VICTIM OF RACISM IN HIGH END SWISS STORE ‘TROIS POMMES’

Oprah Winfrey has revealed that she experienced racism while out shopping alone in Switzerland .

The billionaire mogul said:

“I was in Zurich the other day, in a store whose name I will not mention. I didn’t have my eyelashes on, but I was in full Oprah Winfrey gear. I had my little Donna Karan skirt and my little sandals. But obviously The Oprah Winfrey Show is not shown in Zurich.

“I go into a store and I say to the woman, ‘Excuse me, may I see the bag right above your head?’ and she says to me, ‘No. It’s too expensive.'”

When Oprah insisted on seeing the bag (THREE TIMES) the store assistant replied, “No, no you don’t want to see that one, you want to see this one because that one will cost too much. You will not be able to afford that,” and then proceeded to show the star smaller and cheaper bags.

Instead of throwing down her black card Oprah walked out the store calmly and later  said: “I could’ve had the whole blow-up thing and thrown down the black card but why do that but that clearly is you know … it (racism) still exists, of course it does.”

Racism in Switzerland… I am shocked and appalled. Who knew???

*sarcasm*.

Oprah should have named and shamed the store but not to worry because Blick newspaper has done the honours.

The boutique is called ‘Trois Pommes’ and it’s owner Trudie Goetz, has apologised for the incident. She claims there had been a “misunderstanding” caused by the assistant’s failure to recognise Winfrey. “We don’t have any facial recognition here,” Blick quoted Ms Goetz as saying.

Hahahaha – Oh please Ms Goetz just STOP! That is a load of crap and you know it. I don’t for one second believe that you believe this was about your assistant’s failure to recognise Oprah.  This was racism. Your assistant refused to show Oprah the bag because in her tiny mind no black person could EVER afford such an expensive item and has no business even walking in to your store.

Your thoughts please….

  1. The owner is TOTALLY missing the point. So what if the assistant didn’t recognise Oprah. A potential customer has asked to be shown an item – full stop – show it to her. Assistant has zero business stating it is “too expensive” whether she recognises the customer or not.

  2. Whats hilarious is that the owner didnt apologise for the racism but because its oprah winfrey. You could tell that the associate didnt get fired for that.

  3. Sorry hadn’t finished. I think Oprah did the right thing by walking out and not buying. When treated badly in shops I used to “show them” by buying something expensive but now I realise that’s just rewarding racist behaviour

  4. “Facial recognition?”

    WTF?

Ok, so how about not discriminating because she’s BLACK and not because she’s the most powerful female in the entertainment business on planet Earth?

    HMPH. Not surprised, actually.

  5. Oprah, buy the store and have that wench fired, or alternatively keep her on and make her work till her hands and feet bleed!!
The owner hasn’t even apologised! Friggin hate these racist fools.

  6. Yes Lati, it is the second time it has happened to Oprah. The first incident was in Paris in Louis Vuitton after not being allowed in they then told her that “had been having problems with North Africans”…
I agree Jannette they are sorry because they didnt recognise one of the world’s richest women not for the fact they were racist. KMT

  7. enough of paranoia.. How does Oprah know that the comment was based on her race?

I’m white and I’ve been into a good few designer shops and they have given me the exact same response because I choose to wear casual clothes.

Maybe Oprah was just looking a bit scruffy that day!

  8. Ohhh @bluemarley really, are you really going there?? The woman told her she would not be able to afford a handbag. Unless the woman is a customers bank manager, she has no business telling anyone what they can and cant afford!

Figures that a White person would say this. They simply cannot relate to what is, sadly, a very common occurrence among folks of color. It truly is a Black thing that most of them wouldn’t understand. To insist that it’s automagically “paranoia” speaks volumes to White privilege.

  10. While this could be construed as racism, this could happen to any ethnicity. We should make a concerted effort to focus, not on the ethnicity, but the character of an individual – not only in this situation but as we move forward. The store employee/owners in this situation appear to have made bad decisions in their respective comments. The impact of this will be reflected in their future sales and, hopefully, a more forward thinking and professional attitude will ensue – not only in this store but worldwide.

  11. I am amazed the shop is still open. The owner just does not get it. protecting her sales clerk. Wonder how many millions they have lost in sales for being racist.

  12. I don’t know if Oprah is mad because she wasn’t recognized or because she was treated as a “normal” Black person?
Anyway, Thanks god the newspaper put the shop on the blast, everytime a Black celebrity is victim of racism, they refuse to give up the name of shop etc….. Why???
What’s the point of complaining in that case, at least knowing the name, some won’t be shopping there or it will at least a bit ( very small tho) damaged to their brand etc…

  13. Few people in Switzerland know about Oprah and her wealth. Oprah herself knows she doesn’t get noticed over there and doesn’t have to do the whole security guard and limo deal. She can walk about by herself and take the cab. Oprah is not known to wear furs and million dollar pieces of jewelry…. So an employee sees a stranger come up and wants to look at a $40k purse. That employee knows the stranger could run off with it and the employee would get fired for not being cautious. If that employee had seen Oprah show up with an entourage, security guards and driving a Bugatti, then you can bet they would have kissed her butt. This had NOTHING to do with race.

  14. I think Oprah thought that atleast her status as Oprah should confirm to the woman that she can afford the bag if skin colour wasn’t enough. But obviously they don’t show Oprah show in Switzerland.

  15. Ah…so that’s what the headline at Waterloo station was on about, was too busy trying to catch my train.

Haven’t been to Switzerland in a long time, they always semmed like nice folk, and my Dad never told me otherwise (unlike Spain, where my childish mind remembers buying a TMNT ball, pools and sun, my Dad had a different story to tell).

    On with the show:
Too expensive?! Bish please, isn’t your ass supposed to be working on commission? Or making us buy your expensive shit?! Whether she can afford it or not, as long as her credit/debit card doesn’t get bounced – you STFU, smile and serve. Unless, if she specifically asks for a cheaper one. Has it occurred to you, if my ass can’t afford shit from your shop, I won’t ask you to show me shit, let alone actually enter the shop?! The fact your dumbass is going on about facial recognition, would she have done the same to some random oyinbo that walked in? Seriously, get a better PR team, ’cause you will need it.

Geez, I remember I walked into a perfume shop with the full intention of buying stuff, they just stared away at the counter wondering when is this bish going to leave…After all my looking, I quietly turned my ass towards the exit and calmly said (and of course they could hear me) “Lousy customer service, thank you for saving me money, I will spend it elsewhere.” then turned around and smiled.

  16. I remember a girl back home whose mother was shut out of a shop at some airport years ago. She said that the mother told them that she was walking towards a shop and they closed the door as they saw her coming their way.

  17. Let me make it easier for you. Go out and try to buy a new car worth $40k. Try to take it for a test drive. Is the salesman racist because he asks to see your ID and does a credit check before handing the keys to you? Even if he does that to every customer regardless of their race? Some things are expensive and people want to steal them. There is risk allowing any customer to handle it. And if a $40k purse gets handled too many times it loses value. Do you honestly think Oprah would buy that purse if she saw a hundred other customers had their hands on it?

  18. Say it like it is, Racism. Some people comment on here is the analogy of the store owner behavior. Did not recognize Oprah, was a misunderstanding. Really. A high end store has security if the clerk believe that Oprah was a thief she should have taking precautions before giving her the item, instead of telling her she can’t afford it. Take her to a private room get security. I believe the clerk did what she was trained to do when certain people enter the store. Unfortunately for her the persona non grata was Auntie Oprah.

  19. I could win the lottery tomorrow and NEVER step foot in that store. Behavior/attitude starts at the top and trickles its way down. Oprah never had a chance, nor anyone not fitting Ms. Goetz’s desired customer. Shameful.

  20. Jannette :
Whats hilarious is that the owner didnt apologise for the racism but because its oprah winfrey. You could tell that the associate didnt get fired for that.

So true. Oprah is more hurt because like Nubiahbella said she got treated like a normal black woman looool

  21. Poor Trudie! Black customers and Italian sales assistants!
Switzerland is not what it used to be in good old days, when only blonde blue eyed, lederhosen, cow smelling people were seen around!
I think the Swiss should throw everybody without a Muller or Schmid surname out and let only money enter (black or whatever). Yodel – Yodel

  22. I was going to comment/respond on what @Ray was saying but after looking at his blog site it would be hard to even take serious “those types of Americans”. Even when they make comments that may be worth airing we all know where it is going in the end. You cannot go to any non-american website and not run into “those types of Americans” commenting on something. Damn, loool

  23. Maybe Oprah just didn’t look like she could afford it. Not by race, just by person. Race was not mentioned and she could have said this to anyone who didn’t look wealthy to her. Not that she should have ever done that…but racism???

  24. THIS IS TRULY A SIGN OF RACISM. FIRST OF ALL AS A PREVIOUS STORE OWNER I LEARNED EARLY OWN THAT YOU CAN’T LOOK AT SOMEONE AND KNOW THERE BALANCE IN THE BANK. NOT NECCESARY A BLACK THING BUT EVEN THE WAY SHE WAS DRESSED. IF SHE WAS DRESSED TO THE TEE WEARING DIAMONDS AND THE LIKE,
THE LADY WOULD HAVE PUT HER FEET UP AND OFFER HER COFFEE, WE NEED TO STOP JUDGING PEOPLE, ALL OF US, IF WE DON’T LOOK A CERTAIN WAY THEN WE MUST NOT BE THIS OR THAT. WHAT OPRAH SHOULD DO IS SELL HER OWN BAGS, AND PLEASE MAKE THEM AFFORABLE SO MAYBE I CAN BUY ONE.

  25. Just because Americans (black and white alike) are predominantly racists does not mean that the rest of the world is. Ms Winfrey and her fellow Americans are very quick to assume racial prejudice. Perhaps Ms Winfrey should get used to the fact that the average Joe does not always have the world at his beck and call. As it turns out, people of all races face rejection on a daily basis and just turn the page.
