Check South London rapper Smiler’s new single Enza.

The Video – “Urban” music video directors in this country really need to step their games up! Sitting down watching old US Hip Hop videos made in the late 1990s / early 2000s and then reusing a now dated concept (women prancing around in bikinis, shiny jewellery, expensive cars, a big house, party scene, swimming pool, rapper and his cronies standing around looking ‘cool’) simply won’t cut it in 2010.

Also why is  Smiler standing in a swimming pool, rapping,  fully clothed and wearing a designer jacket with the hood up? Who came up with that ridiculous idea?

This type of music video has had its day. People over here need to stop trying to imitate what the Americans have already done. The focus should be on creating something unique, fresh, new and believable.

The Track –  Smiler can rap. The man has a decent flow and does have potential. But in my opinion the weak production on Enza lets him down.

And now it’s over to you folks! Your thoughts please. Hit or Miss?

  1. A bit harsh, esp looking at the previous vids you blogged!
I think its catchy, good flow for a UK rapper, decent video

  2. it’s like a catch 22, or a maze of madness this uk hip hop ting / even grime… a lot of street music is influenced by wha a gwan over the pond, and instead of doing things completely OUR way, the UK way, our culture, our upbringing, our influences, we burrow and blend and end up somewhere in the middle confused, “Like nah, it think that video is dope!” it ain’t nothing that ain’t been done before and done much, much better.

for me, the production was good quality, but the concept, poor, we’ve seen it too much,… Chain – check, girls – check, swimming pool / phat house – check, cars – check…..yawn!

  3. Are you crazy??? lol The beat is what makes this track so sick!! What else would you want??
The video is very high quality but yes could have been more creative.
Overall I agree with Pheva 🙂

  4. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

  5. What i was saying was, this video concept like said above serves no purpose, or does it, anyway i haven’t listened 2 the lyrics, they might fit the video. lol

  6. Just like any entertainment genre, certain things need to be “generic” to hit the mark. Some videos will be though prevoking, ground breaking and original. Other videos will have tried and tested formulas. It’s no different to music and film. Anyway, this track is decent – where can I hear more?

  7. i agree with u dawg this tune is decent its got a sick beat the quality is the best but overall i think its good at least its beta than some average tunes that i hav heard
