LIBERAL DEMOCRAT Shirley Brown has appeared in court following allegations that she called an Asian Conservative a ‘coconut’.
Brown, who represents the Ashley ward in Bristol said last week that she will plead not guilty to charges of racially aggravated harassment.
Bristol magistrates have adjourned the case until 12 April.
The accused allegedly called Jay Jethwa a ‘coconut’, which implies someone is black/brown on the outside but white on the inside therefore betraying their race, during a heated debate at the Bristol City Council last February.
She was opposing Jethwa’s suggestions that the council should cut funding to the Legacy Commission, a body which funds black projects.
Despite apologising Brown is still suspended from the council and has had her allowance withheld.
She has also been urged to step down as a member of the council.
Oh dear….Oh dear.. Oh dear….
The days when you could freely call a person a coconut/bounty have long gone Shirley.

Hahaha. She’s the Lib Dem representative for the area of Bristol that I grew up in. What a pallava over nothing. I used to get called a Bounty all the time when I was young (my love of NKOTB lol) and I took it on the chin. Jay Jethwa needs to ‘MAN UP’!! 🙂
