ESTELLE ATTACKS ‘BLINDNESS’ TO BLACK TALENT

 estelle2.jpg

Singling out Adele and Duffy, who she knocked off the number one spot at the weekend, she says: “I’m not mad at them, but I’m wondering – how the hell is there not a single black person in the press singing soul? Adele ain’t soul. She sounds like she heard some Aretha records once, and she’s got a deeper voice – that don’t mean she’s soul. That don’t mean nothing to me in the grand scheme of my life as a black person. As a songwriter, I get what they do. As a black person, I’m like: you’re telling me this is my music? F**k that!

“There is a fashion for YWFs – young white females,” said Paul McKenzie, editor of the urban music magazine Touch. “They are the ones who are given the money and the time, and most importantly, people are patient with them. Duffy, if she hadn’t had this hit, would have been given a second chance, and a third. Estelle wasn’t. The people who hold the purse strings are looking at trends rather than talent. If you’re not a young white female – in other words if you’re black – I can imagine that is incredibly depressing.”

“If you’re not a young white female – in other words if you’re black – I can imagine that is incredibly depressing.”

But isn’t it down to people like Paul to create the trends not wait for what’s thrown in his lap? I think it’s depressing that people who have the power to improve entertainment don’t, frankly.

  2. Preach it ! preach it ! sis.

“The people who hold the purse strings are looking at trends rather than talent.” – what trends, who’s setting these trends. The market is SATURATED with the same old stagnant samey samey vibe.

Good on Estelle for using her voice.

  3. ENCORE!!

    Gwan Estelle!

That’s all the majors look for now-a-days….what’s gonna bring them the most money…and the new trend is “white women replicating the Motown sound” or at least trying to…

I bet they [the suit and ties] have instructed a lot of these girls to “put on” that Motown sound…I mean if that’s the way you sing…whatever…I just don’t understand why they ALL have to be white women….I mean damn!! Where the black people at??….but silly me, we are used to dance around, to sing pointless “Frekum Dress” songs and repeat the same tired ass “I got too much make-up on my face” look and run around with chain, rings, mouth plates (or whatever you call them)….

You damned if you do, damned if you don’t….I, choose don’t and walk home with my dignity….that’s just how I roll.

Don’t want my face plastered all over the place because I’m a trend! F**k that! I’m nobody’s poppie show.
