In 2015, media personality Charlamagne tha God (real name Lenard McKelvey), randomly revealed in an interview that he had once been accused of rape, and then proceeded to tell his version of events.
McKelvey later went on to tell slight variations of this story on other platforms and in his autobiography Black Privilege. It was clear that the burgeoning media mogul was keen to get ahead of this story – “tell his truth”, before anyone else could refute claims surrounding the night of June 8, 2001 in Moncks Corner, South Carolina.
In 2018, his alleged victim Jessica Reid, came forward and addressed McKelvey’s version of events. Reid who was 15 year’s-old at the time of the alleged assault, claims that McKelvey drugged and then raped her at a party. She also claims that two other men known to McKelvey, sexually assaulted her at the same party in a bathroom.
