Businesswire reports that radio personality, multi-media mogul and now mental health expert Charlamagne Tha God (real name Lenard McKelvey), has launched the Mental Wealth Alliance (MWA). The Mental Wealth Alliance is described as a forward-thinking foundation, which has been created to destigmatize, accelerate, and centre state-of-the-art mental health outreach and care across the U.S. while building an unprecedented long-term system of generational support for Black communities.
A brainchild of Charlamagne himself, the groundbreaking effort will raise $100 million over 5 years and will partner with Black-led organisations and experts to activate MWA’s three major pillars of life-changing impact:
The Breakfast Club host said: My founding of the Mental Wealth Alliance is the manifestation of a deeply personal vision. I believe improving Black mental health is a core tenet of restoring souls, igniting wealth, and inspiring upliftment for Black America.”
Charlamagne morphing into a mental health guru post-2018 has been an interesting sight. I’ve lost count of the number of times he’s told listeners/viewers about his “anxiety”. Followed up with, visiting a therapist once a week (“every Thursday”) and suddenly switching the conversation to mental health while speaking to every guest that comes through the studio door, sounding like a record on repeat.
The sudden show of vulnerability, spiritual enlightenment and an almost obsessive interest in mental health along with therapy, just seemed to appear out of nowhere.
Who would have believed that Charlamagne Tha God, would become such a staunch advocate for mental health and mental wellness? Oh! The irony.
