Top of the Pops has announced that BBC Radio 1’s Clara Amfo is to become the new co-presenter of Christmas and New Year’s specials, after Reggie Yates revealed he would be “stepping down”.
Last month Reggie apologised after he used the phrase “fat Jewish guy”, during an episode of the Halfcast podcast hosted by Chuckie Lothian.
“The thing that makes it great about this new generation of music artists is that they ain’t signing to majors. They’re independent, they’re not managed by some random fat Jewish guy from north west London, they’re managed by their brethren.”
He later apologised in a statement, saying:
“I’m hugely apologetic for this flippant comment. It was not my intention to offend or reinforce stereotypes, but I’m aware that this could have been interpreted that way and for that I am also deeply sorry. This has been, and continues to be, a huge learning experience for one, and on reflection I have taken the decision to step down from hosting Top of the Pops this year.”
Clara will co-host Top of The Pops Christmas and New Year’s specials with Fearne Cotton.
