It has been reported that Sharon Jones, the singer who spearheaded a soul revival movement with her band the Dap-Kings, has died at the age of 60.
Jones died on Friday in a New York hospital after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.
The cancer was diagnosed in 2013 but Jones still performed during periods of remission.
In an interview with the Associated Press, she said:
“It’s therapy, I know I need rest and sleep. But I want to work and that is our job.
“`You got to be brave. I want to use the time that I have. I don’t want to spend it all laid up, wishing I had done that gig”.
British producer Mark Ronson who used Sharon and the Dap-Kings sound to help create Amy Winehouse’s hit album Back To Black, paid tribute to the star. He said:
“Sharon Jones had one of the most magnificent, gut-wrenching voices of anyone in recent time.”
Jones’ family and members of the band were at her bedside when she died, her representative, Judy Miller Silverman, said.
Such a major loss to music.
Rest In Peace Sharon Jones.
