The Brixton Soup Kitchen was crowned ‘Community Organisation Of The Year’ at last week’s Lambeth council Community Pride Awards 2016.
The Brixton Soup Kitchen became a Registered Charity in January 2015 but was started in January 2013 and quickly gained traction, as it was a much-needed service in the local community. Solomon Smith & Mahamed Hashi, the founders, and fellow Director, Derrick Anderson, were all youth workers at the time.
They had a ‘meeting of minds’ and decided to formally start an organisation to assist the homeless people of Brixton. They initially started in a community centre simply serving tea and biscuits. The organisation quickly grew in popularity which prompted the move to it’s current larger home in the old Domino Club.
The organisation now attracts users from all corners of London.
Congratulations Solomon, Mahamed and the team.
