Former Lewisham councillor Duwayne Brooks, has entered the contest to become the next mayor of London.
Brooks who was recently awarded an OBE (Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) told ITV News he would stand up for London’s cabbies in their battle with minicab firms like Uber.
People come to London to ride in black taxis. It’s an experience and we are going to lose that experience if we allow organisations like Uber and others to destroy our black taxi heritage.
In April 1993 Duwayne witnessed the murder of his best friend Stephen Lawrence, at the hands of a group of white youths chanting racist abuse. The friends had been standing waiting for a bus in Eltham, south east London.
I am old enough to remember when black cabs refused to go south of the river and drivers would act like they didn’t know where Lewisham was. And don’t get me started on the whole meter situation.
Good luck Duwayne.

So he’s more concerned with dealing with an issue that affects more visitors to London than the London residents themselves and making this the USP to front his campaign? I’m not interested nor do I care about London taxi drivers or this whole Uber fiasco. They’re rude on the road when I’m driving and they’ve refused to take me where I want to go. Nor are they visible in my borough of Croydon for me to even care to be honest. I don’t support them. Housing, school places for our children, levels of crime, ways to help youths stay out of trouble, the closing of hospitals and police stations are things I want to hear about, not foolishness like Sol Campbell talking about extending tube platforms in that car crash LBC 97.3 interview or taxi drivers.
I hear you!
