I come from a beautiful, rich and vibrant culture, however it does come with its complexities. This is due the impact of the transatlantic slave trade and colonialism that later spread throughout the Caribbean.
Slavery along with colonialism have both had a huge impact on our identities, religious beliefs, language and even our genetic make up. The impact on our genetic make-up is one of the reasons why the odds are stacked against people who share the same heritage as me, in need of a bone marrow transplant.
Another reason is, there are 200 times more White Northern European people willing to donate than those of African Caribbean descent, because of this if an African Caribbean person needed a lifesaving bone marrow transplant they would have less than a 20% chance of finding the best match.
