British actor, screenwriter and director Noel Clarke tells Krishnan Guru-Murthy that he believes “things are moving forward” in the industry and that there were more opportunities for black actors.
Interesting interview… very diplomatic.
Noel is probably the only black actor who can say with confidence, that he has worked consistently in the UK. He has become the male Angela Griffin.
It would be unreasonable to expect a person in Noel’s position to turn round and bite the hand that feeds him. What was interesting was his attempt to shy away from the image of himself wielding a baseball bat in the artwork for ‘Kidulthood’ – a film that happily exploited black-on-black violence to make big bucks at the box office. I guess, not unlike many of our politcians, here’s a guy who is not ashamed to stoop very low in order to get ahead.
Noel Clarke comes across as someone who now considers himself a part of the British film and TV establishment. Obviously, Channel 4 had him on to offer an opposing view to the people campaigning for greater BME representation. Krishnan then used Noel’s supposedly ‘street cred’ image on the Kidulthood poster to embarass him.
