Estate agents in London are routinely discriminating against black people looking for a home in the private rental market, an undercover investigation has found.

The BBC‘s Inside Out programme uncovered 10 estate agents in north-west London who were willing to meets landlords’ specification that properties should not be let to African-Caribbean people.

Posing as a landlord who did not want to let out his flat to black people, an undercover reporter asked agents if they would be willing to discriminate against potential tenants. All 10 said although they could not openly bar black people they could prevent them taking up the flat by pretending it had been let, or by falsely promising to call them back.

Undercover researchers with the exact same credentials – one white, one black – then posed as potential tenants interested in the flat and were told very different stories. Jo, who is white, was immediately giving a viewing, while Deane, who is black, was told that the flat had been let.

Speaking after the experience he said: “I felt why should he [the agent] discriminate [against] me for not having a place because of the colour of my skin and then I left there angry.”

After seeing evidence of race vetting, rapper Tinchy Stryder, who has campaigned against racial discrimination, said he was shocked at the casual nature of the racism. “I’m thinking, they weren’t saying it as if they were trying to hide it – just like this is the way it is.”

An A to Z estate agent said he would not call back unwanted tenants

This doesn’t surprise me at all. Estate agents have been doing this for YEARS.

The BBC showed its footage to pop star Tinchy Stryder, who has headlined the Love Music Hate Racism festival and spoken out against discrimination.

The rapper, born in Ghana, said: “Did I really just see that? I’m speechless. They don’t feel like they are doing anything wrong, that’s the most shocking thing – the casual aspect of it.

“I’ve had places I wanted and they said, ‘It’s gone’. How do I know it wasn’t because of my background?”

He added: “It’s wrong. It’s more than wrong. I didn’t think that was still happening.”

I can’t help but chuckle when members from the black British people community express shock when incidents of this nature are exposed. Did you think racism had some how disappeared in a puff of smoke Tinchy?

Oh sorry I just remembered that some of us have been led to believe that we now live in a post-racial society.

This is yet another WAKE UP CALL for some.

  1. Yeah, no surprises here. Same as trying to get a job, getting a taxi etc..

Wonder why they asked Tinchy Stryder to comment?

  2. I don’t know if there is a hidden agenda but I wonder why all the letting agents shown were Asians? No saying Asians aren’t racist against Black folks because they definitely are !
On another note I know Black Landlords who do not want Black Tenants lol!

  3. Bwoy I don’t know what to say except God have mercy on all of them.
The level of wickedness in these peoples heart these no hope for them. as for Tinchy Stryder these guys need to wake up and stop allowing themselves to be used as puppets.

  4. I don’t understand why Asians have this intense dislike for black people. It wasn’t us who used to racially abuse them, attack their businesses and generally made life hell on earth for them. The British Empire really did a good job of conquering and dividing and then brainwashing.

  5. Oh dear, these under 25s never fail to surprise me!! Actually, let me not blame the under 25 crew, as there are many over that age that believe that once they have acquired a certain amount of wealth, they all off a sudden feel that they will be treated any differently once they have elevated themselves from working class to middle class. That may apply if your white (hooray for white privilege!!) but if your black, you can come from any walk of life, you will still be seen in the eyes of many (especially those in power) as just another “black” man/woman.

I think heard Kanye West call it “classism” when talking about the fashion industry not wanting him. Ermm, a word to the wise Mr West, the fashion industry is a century old age clique, that will take from underground movements (much like the music industry) then pass it off ideas from those undergroung movements as their own (hence why he saw his leather jogging pant idea all over the place years later!!) Kanye, its still straight “racism”, they don’t want your ass!! Money or no money, your not welcome BLACK MAN!!!

I think this “classism” nonsense is just another buzz word (along with Urban, polyethnic, exotic, etc) created for white people to make them feel comfortable (as saying “black” is such a frightening thing to do!!), as its a form of prejudice that everyone can suffer from equally. However, racism makes everyone feel uneasy. But, I’m not here for anyone’s comfort (who tried to make black people feel comfortable???), you should call a spade a spade, when a spade is being played!

  6. That’s the difference with racism in britain compared to elsewhere. It’s very subtle and discreet. You’ll experience racism without even knowing it.

  7. Asians have a caste system. And you will find that the darker you are, the lower the caste and in society.

  8. He headlined that anti racism festival… the same organisation who attempted to defend and made excuses for English Frank and his antics lol. But I digress… The BBC probably felt that this made him an expert on racism/discrimination so they featured him.
