VIDEO: ALEX WHEATLE ON THE GENTRIFICATION OF BRIXTON

Alex mentions the school Dick Shepherd at the start of video and later goes on to say it was a good school. This made me laugh because I went to Lambeth College and met several former pupils who went to that school and I always remember them telling me that they had the time of their lives at “dirty dicks”.  They just remembered having loads of fun, witnessing bad behaviour and not learning very much.

The school closed in 1994.

Anyway Brixton has really changed a lot throughout the years. But it still has character.

  1. so looks like Brixton is slowly getting the Notting Hill treatment. establish name by others move in well to do folk while locals slowly eased out. Hackney and Dalston will be next. Though nice to see it can get variety. I used to love getting patties from that patty shop. didnt they move to acre lane somewhere.

  2. Yup Brixton is turning like Nottinghill. I saw this coming years back, when I saw a posh white woman on T.V speaking about how she had just sold her house in Brixton for one mill, but where are the black people moving to?

  3. There should be balance. People are saying hackney next because a few of the shitty places have been done up. but why should it stay shitty? Where have all the Brixtonians gone too? Where will all the Hackney People go?

  4. @SoFrolushes It’s already happened in Dalston… was there a few weeks ago and hardly recognised the place or its people…. Tottenham is next…

  5. Gentrification is a 4 tier . Like in China . West london 1st tier sw london fulham clapham , brixton etc 2nd tier 3rd is north london 4th east london . After that your on your own . Poor housing , no employment , less law enforcement etc . Europe same thing , usa same . Sign of the Times Baby ! Black or white asian their all getting moved .
