UK TV: EMMERDALE CASTS BLACK FAMILY- WAKING THE DEAD STAR WIL JONHSON JOINS SOAP

Wil Johnson

It has been announced that former Waking The Dead star Wil Johnson will join ITV 1 soap Emmerdale as a regular cast member.

Johnson will play mechanic Dominic Andrews a single parent, accompanied by his wayward teenage daughter Gemma (played by 14-year-old Tendai Rinomhota).

He said:

“I can’t wait to get started. I am looking forward to an exciting journey. I’ve been told anything could happen with my character.”

[Thanks Charlene]

I have watched Emmerdale on and off throughout the years and to my knowledge the 40 year old soap has NEVER cast a black family before, so it will be interesting to see what storylines the script writers come up with and if the characters last longer than six months.

Congratulations Wil and Tendai.

  1. They have had a lightskin/mixed family it was a Mum and her 2 older children one of whom who had a child.
Latisha was the name of the daughter and the woman who was playing the Mum has been in a few things Waterloo Road and Tracey Beaker (I cant remember her name though)

  2. I will tune in , never actually watched emmerdale before lol! Tendai is very cute little sista. Perfect features and everything .

  3. Ooh really! And what prompted this turn-about?

Emmerdale stubbornly held on to their ‘black free’ zone casting like a like a tramp clutching a bottle of Frosty Jack. They should be fined for their blatantly discriminatory practices. So they have finally relented and have done what Eastenders voluntarily did from their very first episode seventeen years ago, and introduce a black family to the soap, what do they want…a medal? Considering that black people make up a large part of the UK’s minority population why did they take so long to do this? I suspect that they assume that a black family would make the soap feel too ‘urban’ and ‘ghetto’,

While I am loathed to watch this ‘refuge’ for Griffin and co…I will be keeping a close eye on how they chose to portray this family.

  4. As a black female that regularly watches Emmerdale, I do feel that Emmerdale took their sweet time to finally cast a black family! However, I am glad that they have finally done so (even though every other soap beat them to it) I hope that they will have decent story lines, and nothing to reinforce ridiculous stereotypes about black people.

  5. Don’t get too exicted. The black family are connected to drugs and the girl is seen as the bad influence to an innocent white kid. #Typical

  6. yet again a great way to promote interacial relationships in the media. I mean God forbid they have a black man and woman on TV that are in love and wont cheat on each other KMT
