US hit film Think Like A Man (based on Steve Harvey’s bestselling book) has apparently been banned in France because of it’s “lack of diversity”. So in other words they refuse to screen the film there because the cast is predominantly black and that is a BIG FAT no no in France.
Fabienne Fessell of Global Voices writes,
“Surprising as it may be, the answer lies in the fact that the film has an all-black cast. French cinema is often pointed at for not fairly displaying all components of the country’s multiethnic population. Although the recent success of the movie Les Intouchables, which earned French African actor Omar Sy the Cesar award for Best Actor in 2012, caused great pride and hope among French nationals from Africa and the Caribbean, it was not to be the turning point for a deep and lasting change.”

Err no Fabienne this is not surprising. When it comes to the issue of race in France and infact worldwide nothing surprises me.
It was also brought to my attention today that film director Spike Lee encountered the same problem when a french distribution company failed to honour a contract to distribute his film Miracle At St. Anna. Spike then sued their backsides and won. Click HERE to read all about it.
Yet another wake up call folks!

Besides, the usual people can’t identify with Black Folks ( right because everybody can relate to White people since that are the default human lol)
Also a lot of people have a hard times with Black couples ( specially if those show Black women like any other women), funny enough by the poster of the movie I can tell there is a mixed couple.
And finally the movie doesn’t have the well known faces ( Will Smith, Beyonce , Jamie fox etc..)
To be fair the this is not the type of movie I am going for and to me Black American romantic comedies are always the same!
Somehow I find the movie to be full of the usual stereotypes and other good movies with a Black cast tend not to be promoted/ shown in the US too. To get something out of the box, you have to watch them on internet ( The misadventures of awkward black girl will never get the same treatment in the media like TLM does )
By the way, I had no idea about Spike Lee, I am happy it got some cash!!!
That’s bullshit, I’m French I totally disagree with this.
It’s stupid! I won’t be able to see this movie because there are too much black people. What a stupidity. If we fallow them, I AM A LEGEND (starring Will Smith) should also have been forbidden in France: there only is one actor and he is black!
The same cock blocking of films goes on in the UK as well. The Story of Lovers Rock got several doors slammed in its face from distributors and cinemas, despite it selling out wherever it was shown. Think Like A Man was a box office hit in the US reaching the No1 slot (Only for the Hunger Games to knock it off its post).
Its disgusting the way movies are stopped, are black faces really that disturbing to the general public? SMDH!
But when it comes to calling upon the blacks for those french votes, thats when those “niggers” become very useful.
The french JewISH sect at its kabalistic work again, can’t have these nig nogs connecting with something that is their own, they might be inspired, they might have hope.
This has alsways been one of the main central themes that the so called European man has always used to wage war against the so called Negro, that there is NO HOPE nor salvation outside of them and their system, that they are the so called “authorities”, “masters” and “holders” of all knowledge, that all knowledge and information must be sourced from them and vetted by them first, that they are the authority over the histories of others(in other words, whitey know the histories of others better than the people of those histories themselves) and lastly that they know what is best for other people.
Still bredding for acceptance eh Negro? Babylon is falling and isn’t it a bitch eh Edom?
IMO, The film doesn’t throw up as many stereotypes as I’ve seen in previous ‘black films’ actually, and I’m a huge critic. I feel it could have had an all-white cast and I’d still have walked out with the same opinion. As for starring ‘well known’ black faces, I think all the actors./actresses involved carried their weight.
Star of the film was Kevin Hart for me anyway. That man is sumthin’ else!! LOL
If a producer/director – whoever has the cah – wanted to get behind TMOABG, I see no reason why it couldn’t emulate the success of TLAM. It hasa huge following online already, it just needs the financial backing to take it higher.
As for the French banning it for having an all black cast – quelle surprise – NOT! Each time I’ve been to Paris, I’ve experienced some ignorant f**ker (excuse my French – and pardon the pun), trying to ruin my day!
@Nubiahbella Actually this movie was really good. I being an American saw it opening weekend as very surprised… Because normally as you stated, these movies can be the same. But i will just add that i am not surprised by the French… ignorance abound….always. But someone should do something about this kind of attitude…. Verbs….Still breeding for acceptance eh Negro? Babylon is falling and isn’t it a bitch eh Edom?…for real!
I agree with all of you, it’s a joke, to be honest like what Terra said it’s the same in the UK I remember them moaning about Rasin in the Sun when it was in theatres because of the all black cast, also they tried hard to ban Lovers Rock.
Lets be real here white people are the most insecure and arrogant race on the planet who can’t bare to see a film if it doesn’t have them in it playing the hero, this is the reason why Hollywood is getting boring because with so many worldwide stories to tell Hollywood just keeps churning out remakes or the same history epics of Europe like Robin Hood and if it is a story not involving them they just stick white faces where the faces should’ve been black, asian or arab.
I recently read an article from George Lucas about how he couldn’t get funding for the film Red Tails because it had an all black cast check it out http://newsone.com/1815575/red-tails-is-box-office-hit/
