Home and Away actor Jay Laga’aia has accused the show of racism in an angry Twitter rant, saying he was dropped because the series already had a character of ethnic background.
Laga’aia, an actor of Samoan descent who played the Rev Elijah Johnson, backed calls for commercial television to end its “white Australia” policy.
“As someone who lost his job on H&A because they couldn’t write two ethnics that weren’t together, I’d like a chance to ply my trade,” he tweeted.
His attack followed criticisms by another high-profile Australian actor, Firass Dirani, who said television programs did not reflect the nation’s racial mix. She attacked a perceived “white Australia” policy, saying shows needed to cast “different flavours, different cultures”. Continue Reading….
Jay is probably right. The producers probably felt that having more than one ‘minority’ character in the show would probably be too much for the script writers to handle.
I remember years ago Home & Away featured an Aboriginal actor. I was shocked when I saw him appear on my screen.
Anyway Australia still has a long way to go when it comes to the issue of Race etc. I say no more.
