Check out Dat’s A Wrap Show host Poet and listen to his views on Black History.
In Poet’s opinion we as a people should stop focusing on the past and celebrate what is happening in the present day. According to him artists like Tinie Tempah, and Chipmunk “are a part of black history” and we should celebrate that instead.
Listen to Poet’s views below.

So in other words ignore and don’t bother educating yourselves about our existence pre-slavery and post slavery straight through to this point in time. Forget about the pioneers who fought and died to make life easier for those of us walking around today. Forget about the sacrifices made. Forget about major milestones and events that took place in the past that in many cases still affect us today. Forget about all of that. Just focus on and celebrate a bunch of music artists, most of whom don’t really have much to say, avoid addressing real issues and parade about wearing dark shades and skinny jeans. Just focus on the black community’s contribution to music in 2011 because that’s all that matters. After all that is what black history is all about!
*Huge sigh* I absolutely despair sometimes. I really do.
For one our history/contribution to the world involves a lot more than just singing, dancing and entertaining the masses. Also it angers me when people dare to tell us to forget about our history and it angers me even more when those words fall out of a black person’s mouth. No other race of people is told to forget about their history, who they are and where they come from and rightfully so. So why should we be expected to forget?
Kids get out there and educate yourselves about black history because no one else will, and know that our contribution to the world goes beyond our “services” to the world of entertainment and sport.
Your thoughts please. Do you agree with Poet?

Wow.
Janice you have said it all, nothing to add.
@Janice well said… this guy thinks he has so much knowledge.. But he is really just dumb… That is the problem with so many of our youth. They have no clue about what our ancestors had to go threw just for us to have what we have now. As you said it when i hear it come from a Black person…i just cringe because it such an immature statement. And some very impressionable kids will listen to this foolishness…
This is why we are so confused, because we don’t what is happening to us and why. And if people think that history is history, i suggest they look closely at the present and ask themselves why certain things are happening, why we aint moving forward for real, why we are so dependant on certain people and then come back and tell me to forget about black history. *sigh*
Did he say that Black History starts with Tinie Tempa and Chipmunk? I’M DONE!!!!
WOW!!!….I actually liked this fool before seeing this. LOST!!!
The following quote I am using here is what I intend to put on my blog as why BHM is significant enough for me to care. It is taken from the book Destruction of Black civilisation by chancellor Williams. It speaks volumes
“What became of the Black People of Sumer?” the traveller asked the old man, “for ancient records show that the people of Sumer were Black. What happened to them?” “Ah” the old man sighed. “They lost their history so they died”. – A Sumer Legend
If all he knows is slavery then that rapper guy is clearly lost in translation already. To even imply that Black people began at slavery is a travesty in itself. Entertainers only show young kids that if you entertain people you possibly can make money but it tells them nothing of their history except music. To be history you have to be in the past. Yes they can be history in the making but they are not in the past.
History pre-slavery is what kids need to learn. Learn that Africans once ruled the world fell from Grace and will soon return to greatness. You cannot tell me to tell my sons to look at chipmunk and tinie tempah as history.
Where is the universal accepted place of the start of the human race – Africa – so what exactly is there to be afraid of in getting some historical knowledge.
@Sofrolushes haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
“You cannot tell me to tell my sons to look at chipmunk and tinie tempah as history!!”
DEAD DEAD!
.
i think this is really simple……. NOT EVERYBODY is qualified to give opinions on black history….. his argument is young… i dont see no point in dissing him… he knows what he see’s
a common problem with the trickle down manipulation of modern black culture
this is how a lot of young people who have not had it instilled in them to understand how important their actual history is .. will think… who can blame them.. its short sighted .. and dangerous… but i think its young…… the fact that he could mention tinie tempah as a more prominent Nigerian icon … vs say Miriam Makeba/ Hugh Masekala/ FELA KUTI….. screams of an innocent ignorance….
these people don’t mean anything to him …. because of how culture is handled with youth nowadays…… its throwaway!~…. i am not mad at him … more the environment that raises someone to be so unaware of what comes before him…
This guy is a fool. He obviously received no lessons on black history from within the home when he was growing up and now as an adult chats this nonsense. How can he seriously believe that the likes of Tinie Tempah and Chipmunk are a part of black history and that an event should be organised to celebrate them. This fool is taking the living piss. And the sad thing is people will listen to his crap. He should be ashamed of himself.
i been thinking about this ….. ANOTHER POINT IS .. if tinie tempah or chipmunk or dizzee rascal turned around to him and said he was wrong…. he would think about it.. hard….. but if us older heads make a point and raise it it will be automatically dissmissed…
so theres no point …!! he wont realise that his opinion is out of sync with reality
…. until someone of value to him says no thats wrong…!!
end off!!
What exactly did he think Black History was prior to Chipmunk and Tinie Tempah coming on the scene? They only came into existance about 2-5 years ago!
I hear what your saying (@ty) about the young ones not being taught. But you can only teach those that want to learn. I really dont see any requests to say “Can we learn something other than the slave trade?”
When all is said and done, if any of todays younger generation want to know more about Black History other than the slave trade, then they can use the same resources that they use to find out how they can download the latest mixtape CD, the internet!
The internet is a great resource (a resource none of us had when we were coming up) to find out virtually anything, but if your interests lies strictly in music, due to the fact that kids are constantly being told “entertainment” is all that matters in life, then why would they take an interest in wanting to learn about their history!
I for one was not taught Black History at school and I certainly did not wait for the month of October to come around to make myself aware of my history. I request of my own back to learn more, so I did. Sometimes individual responsibility needs to be placed on your own head.
What I find hilarious is that he feels that “more” focus need to be placed on the likes of Chipmunk and Tinie.
Correct me if im wrong, but isnt there about 30 music video stations on 24/7, a wealth of radio stations, not to mention the amount of blogs (SBTV, Grime Daily, Jump Off TV) and music shows (T4 are forever doing some sort of rockumentary on the current crop of urban Team UK artist) that dedicate every waking minute all year round to these artist. To complain that they should be brought in as the pivital focus of Black History during the month of October would suggest that we have no history at all, being as “dem just reach”.
A people without a history is a lost people!
“Forget about the past”?? That slogan is straight out of the camp of Edom. In order to move on from the past, the past crimes and wounds that were created must be attended to and must heal. I do not see the so called white man offering any kind of reparations to my people, nor has he repented for his past crimes against us. In fact all I see the so called white man doing today is simply taking a rusty machete to an already incurable wound and deliberately trying to make it worse. I have not yet heard the European man apologise for slavery, why, because he is NOT SORRY FOR IT and he is still benefiting from it today.
When you travel about on buses, trains, the underground and when you look at the infrastructure, buildings, shops, roads, houses, towers etc, all this stuff was built off the backs of OUR FOREFATHERS. This is why if we began to take back what is rightfully ours in payment for our past suffering, there would not be one brick, breeze block, tap, bath or kitchen sink remaining in this place nor in the US.
Its kind of funny how WE are told to forget about the past, yet the so called JewISH people are permitted to continually ramble on about their so called “holocaust” and they aren’t even the real Jews.
2 million so called JewISH people in Germany at the beginning of WW2 but somehow 6 million died?? You do your own maths on that one.
So called gas chambers that weren’t even air tight which would have allowed the gas to leak out into the nearby streets and also kill the people in the surrounding areas. Hmmmmm.
So called concentration camps with SWIMMING POOL FACILITIES??
Then to top it all off, for the so called injuries that were supposedly inflicted on them by the Germans, they are given land in the Middle East??? How does that work? Shouldn’t they have received land in the country that afflicted them? Am I missing something here? Europeans receiving land in Asia?????
What about our Trans Atlantic Slave Trade holocaust, huh, the real holocaust? At least 100 million died crossing those waters and that figure is a conservative one. I’m sure that a JewISH person has put him up to this speech as this kind of talk is utter nonsense.
So no, I cannot move forward until the crimes against my forefathers have been amended.
He is right though when he says that Tinie Tempah and Chipmunk are a part of black history, black “CONTROLLED” history, a time when every nation is taking its turn in making merchandise off our backs.
This boy is just stupid. But I agree with Ty. There is no point in cussing him, the boy just doesn’t know any better.
Each time I listen I just shake my head. Lost.. just lost.
I don’t think alot of black people realise but white people will never respect a race who has no pride in their history, they might like you but they will never respect you, when white people keep saying why black history month they are testing black people to see how strong they are, because white people respect their culture don’t believe me look in your wallet at the notes you have (if you have any) walk the streets of any city in London and you see statues, when you was in school you learnt about world war 2, which always excludes black and asians who also fought 1066 etc because white people are proud of their history and know their children need it for their surival, the more we keep saying we don’t need our history the slowly we are going to get wiped off the face of the planet.
the purpose of history amoung many of the young is not understood.
Black History month is realy black creative arts months. We have an infinate history to learn and should be discovering, rediscovering and proving facts about our history all the time, not once have I heard a speach from a black scientist or doctor about anything to do with our history in this so called month, poetry is nice but just nice.
loads of black/mixed race kids 13+ tell me about black history and conspiracies they have learned with excitement and really want to know more. I’ve sat for hours discussing with kids and someone eventually says “if we was so great what went wrong?”.
This is the question that needs to be understood why they are even asking it in the first place. What is the value of you understanding what went wrong and right. Then a true understanding of histories importance and realising that its not just about a memorial for peoples acheivements, and why such a big effort into covering it up was always made thoughout history.
This guy just doesnt understand what its for.
Can you imagine in the US a white guy saying to white kids you know what forget about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln your history is Eminem and Linkin Park. LMAO There would be an uproar in the US, parents would throw the guy out the country.
I think every black person in the UK and world needs to read two books Destruction of Black Civilization by Chancellor Williams this is like my black bible and also Staying Power By Peter Fry about the history of black people living in the UK from before windrush till now.
There goes the saying again if you want to hide something from a black man hide it in a book, there just no excuses no more the books are there. I grew up in Brighton for gawd sake and still found black books in the library
Chico-Rei Black people need to learn their history period, NOT for white people to respect them. White peoples respect is the last thing we need.
@The Real NV
“the purpose of history amoung many of the young is not understood. Black History month is realy black creative arts months”
That is exactly what it is! 😦
@Verbs2011…right you are bro. Keep it coming! @Melissa well said i always hear people saying respect from the white people. I could give a rat’s ass about the white man’s respect. But Chico- Rei did make some very good points. All i can say it teach the youth… talk to them and tell them. Will they listen.. Some will and some won’t. I’m always amazed how when i talk to some teens how much they do listen. Maybe because I’m not that old.lol! Ty was right he doesn’t know any better. Oh why don’t some of you guys get in touch with this dude… Just an idea…i mean Janice is MAD News must have some connection…right??? This dude is obviously confused and has no idea of who he really is. Or better yet what others before him have done just so he can be who he is now!!! It’s all good though… Love reading what others have to say…I’m impressed!!! More so with the pride each and every one of you has in being BLACK… So many people are so busy trying to fit into a world as my bro Verbs always says…don’t want them. HAPPY BLACK HISTORY MONTH TO ALL MY UK BROTHERS AND SISTERS. And we do understand that our history is not just in the month of october. or February here in the states..it’s 365 BLACK as the slogan says!!
@Moreno
Like Ty said the only people that would be able to get through to him would be Tinie Tempah, Dizzee and Chipmunk. Lol
But I hope he reads the comments and learns something.
I’m gonna buck the course of the comments, because I get where he was going… Until he named a bunch of flash in the pan artists like they’re something to be celebrated as black history. Yeah, Chippy, Tinie and Wretch have had success of late but that’s present. Maybe 10 years down the line people will say “Remember TeamUK?”
Where I do get him is sometimes there’s too much emphasis placed on the same old dudes. When we think of BHM automatically Martin, Malcolm, Nelson and Rosa Parks spring to mind. That isn’t because they are necessarily the ones I care or relate to the most, simply down to repetition. Why don’t people know about Marcus Garvey like the do the aforementioned? Or Kwame Nkrumah?
It’s due to rolling out the same old names and stories why I don’t care about BHM as much as I probably should (that isn’t to say I don’t care about BH). To keep something interesting, there must be something new thrown in else it becomes stagnant.
They don’t roll out the black immigrants to UK story as much as they glorify Yankees. Windrush movement isn’t as well known to majority of black kids as it should be in my opinion. What about the struggles black people overcame in this country? How about some important black figures making moves and creating opportunities for people of all colours? What about a historic recent moments such as Stephen Lawrence’s story? Not to say him dying is a positive, but positive’s came as a result of unfortunate circumstances. Not even to say everything has to be a zero to hero story either. I know why they don’t (Britain would rather keep a lid on it), but that doesn’t make it acceptable.
To me, Black History’s stuck in and around the 60s. You mean no one’s made a positive contribution to society since 40/50 years ago? Not to say “Bun history, it’s all about now”, just saying as well as the old ones, give people since then some credit.
@M Sparks I understand exactly what you are saying and feel the same way, I’m tired hearing about Nelson Mandela and MLK I’m not saying what they done wasn’t amazing, but they were conformists, that’s the reason schools never teach about Malcom X and The black panthers, I’m tired hearing about 2pac, it’s like black people don’t read and then roll out the same names that’s why i said people should read staying power about black people in the UK from before windrush, you mention windrush the problem is black people in England think that’s the only black people came to England black people lived in England years before windrush, there were so many that they sent them to Sierra Leone yet many stayed, people don’t even realise that Penny Lane the road made famous by the Beatles was a place where black slaves were sold, this isn’t even black history this is British History, what about heros like Olaudah Equiano who lived and died in the UK, with all the Jamaicans in the UK why isn’t Queen Nanny talked about, Frederick Douglass lived in the UK for a year and toured the country doing speeches, slavery ended in the UK because of the Haitian Revolution not because white people wanted to be nice, that’s the black history I’m talking about not the same names like Rosa Parks over and over again, I’m tired of hearing about civil rights, the people in the UK can’t always relate with what happened in the US so they switch off.
It’s like every year teachers say here we go again right let me get out MLK I have a Dream speech, then they sigh and say well I’ve done my part.
The reason why you have so many racist white people is because from a young age they’re told they are the greatest, they rule the world, have a history to be proud of and people who look like them run everything and made everything, they are shown pictures of angels who look like them and a white Jesus, they are told white is right, that’s why they walk so proud, they can’t afford to have black people uplifted, why would they bother if a black person is uplifted he migth take the job from their children, but they left the door open, there’s still librarys and the internet that tells black people the truth we’re just too blind and too whitewashed to see it, or bother to read it.
The problem is I gave you some titles of some books but I know no one gonna read them, we moan about the kids but no one talks to them we just moan about them.
If Tinnie Tempah and Chipmunk are the future then we are going to have some serious problems in the future.
I agree with him in the sense of celebrating our current brothers and sisters who are positively achieving things in their chosen field currently BUT… We will ALWAYS need to acknowledge/appreciate/celebrate/praise/give thanks and most importantly recognise our fore-fathers and mothers that helped to shape the world as we know it, but did/do not get the credit and accolades.
Black people did a lot for the world and civilisation itself, but are not featured heavily enough in school text books where we are first introduced to structured learning which shapes what we go on to do and be in life.
I think we have a duty to keep their work and memories alive and not just for 31 days in October.
Sounds cliché, but knowledge is definitely power.
@Chico-Rei
I am going to check out those books. Thanks
man we were lucky if they did any black history in my school when i was there, and when they did bother they’d mention mary seacole passingly in assembly. poets point is that really schools dont really teach black history in depth as part of the curriculum, and as its hard enough trying to get kids interested in any history at all, why not use black history month to appeal to something they can relate to.
So just teach them about present day music artists? Because that’s what he was saying.
im kinda taken aback that after hearing all he was saying you guys took out that your kids should idolize chipmunk and tiny tempah. i swear we must of been watching a next show cah in the show i was watching he mentioned them at the beginning and black history in the middle. he might not be able to articulate himself as well as the scholars who have posted above but really as educated people you should be able to look at this objectively and take something out of it rather then just hounding out the negativity. there have been many positive black figures, some from a long time ago in the past and some more present. really we should be able to appreciate them all, or failing that diversify the ones we remember each year.
i dont think thats what he’s saying at all, he’s saying let’s recognise positive black people today. not all of them are musicians? How about we learn about jean-bertrand artistide this year
whatever he’s saying …. the exAmples let down the sentiment…… why should we celebrate black pop artists as heroes…… why not other trades?
i think he meant well.. but he sounded out of his depth.. it happens to me sometimes… when people ask me about stuff i have not reseached.. i fluff my lines… it can happen
I didn’t have black history taught in school. I’m 20. My mother taught me pretty much everything I know about black history. We went to the slavery museum in Liverpool, we sat with poets and scholars and learned from the best of them.
But at the end of the day, if we only focus on the ancient history, then that will be the mindset that we’re stuck with. By refusing to acknowledge the black people who are paving the way TODAY, we are doing ourselves as a people a GREAT disservice.
Black people today are RESPECTED as musicians, RESPECTED as politicians, RESPECTED as scientists. But you want to ignore their exploits because they are still alive and because they didn’t arrive on a slave ship and aren’t whipped on cotton fields every day.
The world has changed in the last few hundred years, and I feel like you’re failing to see that. We are in a society where through hard work, black people can really achieve things.
I have a son.
And when he’s old enough, he WILL know about Harriet Tubman.
He will watch Roots.
He will know about MLK and Rosa Parks.
But he will also know about P-Diddy. A man who made it acceptable for a black man to be a true musical entrepreneur.
He will know about FUBU and know that black people can become BILLIONAIRES within the community.
He will know about HIS GRANDFATHER Bob Hazell, one of the first black internationals for England Football.
He will know about Barack Obama and know that he lives in a world where there is no limit for him as a black child.
By all means remember the past, but don’t do yourself the disservice of ignoring the future that we as black people are currently building for ourselves.
his exact words were, “Why do we focus on the same people every year? I feel there should be a black history event where we talk about all the brand new people that are coming out and good representations of black people”. when he referred to himself, wretch and chipmunk he was saying that they too are a part of history if the make an impact. Clearly there a lot of black people who have made an impact and should be noted, so why mention the same people every year when theres so many to chose from. you’re clutching at straws because you feel guilty alienating a young man trying to produce a free platform for people who express themselves well to be known, when really you should be thanking him for making such an opportunity and apologizing for slandering him
@Osaze Luck has nothing to do with the fact that Black History wasnt taught to you in school. BH isnt taught in school because it serves the school system no purpose to feed the young minds on black boys and girls to realise that they come from a legacy of kings, queens, scholars and lineage of people that have contributed to the world outside of music, dancing and kicking a football! Never think yourself lucky because information has been withheld from you.
I’m sure the vast majority of people that have any form of knowledge of BH, probably found that knowledge from outside the schooling system. The younger generation are slightly luckier than the older generation, due to the fact the you now have easier access to information, with the invention of the internet. You do not have to rely on teachers to teach you something that you can learn of your own backs. If I were to ask Poet, where can I find information on the latest mixtape CD, he would point me in the direction of a myriad of websites within seconds. Sourcing information on BH in this day and age is no different.
Instead of Poet complaining about what BH focuses on every October, he has the choice to learn about whatever aspect of BH he chooses. If he feels he’s heard it all about the slave trade (which im willing to bet he hasnt) he can always take it upon himself to learn more post slavery and pre-slavery. Again, the owness of filling his head on knowledge has to be on him, if he is not being supplemented with that knowledge in school. I certainly did not depend on my school to teach me about BH.
In regards to the music artist he mentioned, lets no get it twisted, they have been here for all of 2 seconds. To tell you r kids that BH started when Chipmunk or Tinie picked up the mic is beyond ridiculous. That would imply that we had no history before they came into music (which would have been about 5years ago, methinks!). A people without a history is a lost people!
There contribution has not gone unoticed by black people or by mainstream media. You only have to look at the wealth of TV channels, blog sites, vlog sites, TV music shows, awards shows that are aired into our homes on a daily basis, 24/7 all year round. There is no way you can say that you NEVER get any focus on these new artist. Do we get even the smallest amount of black history pushed to us they way new artists news gets pushed to us, err no! Is really such a big ask that we pay homegage and respect to the people that came before us for one measly month? People who went through a ton of crap so that we can enjoy the like of listening to people like Chipmunk and Tinie Tempah? When this month is done, we will all go back to listening to how these artists have changed the game, thus forgetting the fact that we actually have a great history of people that made it possible for us and them to even have a future.
@Simon with respect, if you feel Poet does not know how to articulate himself properly, then its always a good idea that you say nothing if you cant convey your message in a manner that people will be able to understand you.
Just know that no one is disrespecting or not acknowledging these new artists coming through and doing great things. But that does not mean that we as a race should turn around and disregard those that came before us. Being as Poet has such a great platform to reach the youth, maybe is would be a good idea for him to come up with a concept in which he is able to link younger black notable people he believes is making history and show how our past history relates. Everything is relative at the end of the day. Im sure there will come a time when all these new artist coming up would love to be acknowledge by the generation coming up behind them.
I have never in my life heard any race of people disregard their past as much as we do, maybe because some of it is so heinous that we cant come to terms with it. But we need to look at the great that we have done, as we have done alot. Do not let the image of the slavery of the black race make you feel that this is all we are worth. That only serves to the powers that be that want us to think that we have made no contribution to this world.
@Osaze do you know what “slaunder” means?
In the context you wrote your sentence, I dont think you do!
Here is the links to three books every black person should read staying power is for the people in the UK
I’ve mentioned this before but when I learnt my history I felt a sense of pride that we weren’t just slaves and were kings and queens who built pyamrids that have scholars scratching their heads and even when we were slaves we fought from the moment we are taken till slavery was abolished. I walk with a proudness that scares the hell out of white people because I know who I am, white people don’t what a whole race like that. Black parents should make every day black history day or every weekend black history weekend

@Terra as a media law student, I know all too well what slander and libel is. And taking someone’s statement out of context and twisting it in a way that damages their reputation is, indeed defamation of character and if he really wanted to be an arse about it, he could take the author of this article to court and probably win.
What for expressing an opinion? For questioning why we should forget our history? For questioning Tinie and Chipmunk’s current contribution to black history?
Hahahhahahahha now I know we’ve truly lost it.
Good luck with the media law degree.
The people defending Poet who are probably his age group still just still seem to be focusing on black people’s contribution in the world of entertainment.
@Ash El-Negro Francis
Do you plan on just teaching your son about American black history? What about the history of black people in this country post slavery.
P Diddy – “A man who made it acceptable for a black man to be a true musical entrepreneur.” I think you should research Berry Gordy first.
@Ash El-Negro Francis
Firstly taking someones comments out of context is done by Poet on all of his shows. Maybe he was thinking that in his last show when he did a skit on the Nation Sweetheart Cheryl Cole, taking her words our of context to imply that she isn’t a fan of black people. Did you send Poet and email about “slaunder” the?. Do me a favor!
You want to defend a man whose entire profile has been built of the fact that he chats about people non stop!!
Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! If Poet is reading this, he must be saying “Please Ash, don’t speak for me anymore!”
Clearly your only half way through your degree, when you have completed the course, come back and find me, and we can talk about “slaunder” LMAO!
For the record, I never dissed any young artists coming up, but you seem to think its ok for him to be dismissive of our past. Again, we are the only race that is dimissive of our past culture. We have no respect for it and do not cherish it. Jewish people dont do that, neither do Asians, they hold there culture and history (past and present) in high regard. Black people as a whole do not do that (run from it), hence why it’s so easy for outside influeneces to come into our culture, pick it apart and present our history to the world as they see fit.
A prime example of this is, everyone is boo hooing as to why Wretch 32 loses out to the more “marketable” Jessie J, by an award show (MOBOs) that was initally set up to give black musicians a platform to be celebrated, as they were ignored by mainstream media. We are guilty of doing the same thing by disregarding out past and not learning from what came before. Where so focused on appealing to the majority of people (caucasians) in this nation called the UK, that we have sold ourselves out. I for one was not surprised at the whitewash of the awards show and I’m not even mad at Jessie. We did it to ourselves, and it looks as though the legacy of selling out our culture and history will continue, as we seem to have a generation of kids that dont care (Poets words, not mine)
As Poet says “You tink bout dat!”
I might understand if he said some rappers who make postive lyrics but Chipmunk and Tinnie Tempah are you serious, what have they done for black people?, what are they doing for black people? if he’s talking about now why doesn’t he mention the black people in the UK that are still fighting to make a difference Chip and Tinnie are a bunch of minstrels cooning around for the master. I’m not hating but there better rappers than these two, Chipmunk does a song with a singer (Chris Brown) and the singer raps better than him on this own song same when he hooked up with Mavado (hmm that’s a good role model there) and then Trey Songz I actually switich off when I hear Chips verse, lucky I wasn’t filming when Poet said that because I would’ve stopped the camera and gave him a firm slap
@Terra as always you talk sense
look you clearly didnt listen to what he said, and you’re clearly not listening to what we’re saying either. he didnt say we should look up to chipmunk. if any of you can quote when he said we should i’ll back down.. he’s saying theres more to our history then slavery, but if to you lot all we’ve ever been is slaves then safe i guess we’ll never agree on black history
appologies i mean’t slander if i spelt it wrong you’re gonna have to excuse me i’m dislexic
yes problem with BHM’s repititions, but smarties arnt the answer.
Julius Caesar, Adolf Hitler, charles dickens, Tesla, bill gates, charlie chaplin, columbus, kylie minogue, John F Kennedy, justin Bieber.
If someone saw no problem with this list what would you think of their perception of history and its purpose.
The word ‘Black History month’ is misleading in itself, it has a subconsceince affect like its an underground history or Dark forgotten history not to be messed with. Ie, ‘Black Market’
It should be called Core, Root or Prim History if its to be tagged. As it was first and primary as black people where found covering the most land on earth before any, so its even wrong to just call it African history. Or maybe just Mystery as most our history is kept secret.
I’d be happier with Black Mystery Month, atleast it would suggest people look at what is darkly hidden or unverified by western civil.
MJ, James Brown, BB King, Jimmy Hendrix, Bob Marley, Tupac, Dr Dre, Jay Z, Chipmunk, Buju Banton, Prince, Tinnie Tempah. If MTV Base showed these peoples for the BHM’s to kids and other channels and radio stations. The levels, the whole meaning, perseption and comprehension of black history is lost. How can they understand what its for? This is what is happening minus the Jimmy hendrix, BB king, Bob Marley…. While at the same time being FORCED to embrass MLK, traffic lights, peanut butter jelly time, And empathise with mandela and slavery on a constant never ending loop on a tape machine. Perfect recipe to hate hearing about your history and stop looking deeper, they already dont know why you should learn it in the first place.
@ Osaze
play it to someone(s) and just ask what they got from what he said. Dont get to deep and say did you listen to every word or read in between the lines of what his getting at… just listen to their first initial response to watching it once without any analysis. If most got A and you got B maybe you went too deep in the C.
@Osaze Bacchus-Oum
No one on here didnt say that there wasnt more to our history than slavery, we all know that. However, he did say “why do we have to focus on people that existed 275 years ago?”. The fact that he said that, shows that he has learnt nothing from the history that he has apparently knows about. Again, you want to learn more, then go learn more, no one is stopping you.
Current events should tell you that history has repeated itself many time over the years, yet we learn nothing as we refuse to acknowledge the past.
Slavery still goes on today in many parts of the world, and in different forms. From the sex trade and the trafficking of people across the globe, to genocide happening in countries all over the world. You think this is an “old skool” thing, my friend it is happening right under your nose, but your priority os to focus on individuals that we see on a daily basis, on every major music station 24-7.
We’ve all said numerous times that black history exists post and pre slavery. Thats not the argument, the argument is that he believes that our history should start with the likes of Chipmunk and Tinie. Do you think our history started all of 3-5 years ago?
Are you aware that the average career span of a music artist is 4 years? Do you believe that 4 years is enough time to be considered a history maker. These artists could all but disappear in a year, and I can bet you anything that if that happens, no one will be mentioning them and Black History in the same breathe.
History: Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. —George Santayana.
The kids will learn more about black history from this discussion then they will at school.
Just wow to the idiots who believe that black ‘history’ is about entertainment..in an economic global climate like this I pity their childrens’ futures for real…
for those who want to look at musical black history. Josephine Baker the original celeb to adopt from every nation in fact she she adopted more than the jolie pitts. she had car accident and became infertile. She adopted a child from every race creed and religion. She left usa due to racism and was embraced by France and europe except there were issues with how she dressed. the infamous banana skirt. she spoke and sang fluently in french. Her adopted children came before her wealth and husbands. she did go back to usa. had to walk through kitchens n backdoors when performing etc. She took part in civil rights and the French Miitary honored her when she died. Now that is history – of course I have given you the short version.
Black History is the “acceptable name” but what do we really mean. African and African Diaspora history is what it is. Besides Nas how many of these entertainers that talk about oh how we were kings actually know of any African Kings. Pre-slavery Rome learned about trade industry maths etc etc etc from the egyptians. Arabs have never been real friends of Africa they taught europeans slavery and they pretty much still practice it today even in the UK.
Was all Africans taken from the continent put into slavery or where they assimilated into elites society? Why was hottentot a freak show? Sarah Baartman aka Hottentot venus of the khoikhoi people – her story will give an insight into europeans obsession with big bums. etc etc .
What really happened during Windrush era? No milk and no honey. My dad fought the teddy boys who simply attacked him for the colour of his skin and his accent. Why did the police get sloppy when it came to Stephen Lawrence? Why did those same police officers try to criminalise his friend? Why are the likes of Brian Belo and Frank Bruno white mans acceptable face of Black? Why did Africans replace Jews in Ghettos?
Did europeans bring Christianity to Africa or did it already exist in it’s purest form hence the oldest christian church in the world is there.
Do you see the point I am making? To say that something simply just happens is very blaze’ . You need to get an understanding of why things happen not to excuse but to explain and give you strength of knowing. A 14 year old boy was electrocuted in south carolina and now is said to be 100% innocent. Why is black a crime. Why does light skin dark skin issues exist. Who introduced it.
Why is it that Haile Selassie say he is not the messiah yet Rastas say he is. The evidence is out there. I could go on and on.
I close by saying this. With the Bible you have the Old Testament and the New Testament. However to understand why certain things are said phrophecised (sp) etc in the New you have to go back to the Old to have that understanding. One does not cancel out the other.
