The increasingly annoying Jessie J won Best Newcomer (surprise) which stunned Wretch 32 supporters. Fellow rapper Chipmunk (who was at the ceremony) then went on a Twitter rant about the shady music industry and there being a “conspiracy”.

These artists are so naive. It’s the highly suspect MOBO Awards. What did they expect?

  1. wow that looks terrible, why don’t they just do black music awards for black music artists, I thought that was the orignal point to give people of colour who don’t do pop music an opportunity to win an award Jessie J does pop music same with Rihanna they should scrap MOBOs and call it pop awards or youth awards or something, did anyone black even win an award lol

  2. Just call is MOO and done. Take the “B” out the title. They will probably change the name to MOUO (Music Of Urban Origin). They have been trying to do away with the word “black”, looks like that have suceeded.
How does the best Reggae act go to Alborosie, joke dem a mek!

  3. I wonder if MOBO’s original intention was mainly to do this award for Black people or is it as it states Music of Black Origin which means anyone from anywhere can get a MOBO if the music can be said to be of Black origin

It is clear to me though that it is all about money and commercial music that has sold that has any remote relation to black music (except the gospel and jazz award which probably aint about sales and more about your popularity in those scenes)

Personally I dont take these awards that seriously or to heart anymore and havent done so for years

  4. All awards ceremonies are the same and for the most part unless voted for by the public, deals are made for certain artists to win. The thing is MOBOs was created to give black music a platform in this country and for the most part has achieved this objective to the extent where people are questioning whether it needs to exist anymore. Black music is now mainstream and most of the new hit music today is pop yes but has a black influence so the fact that non black artists win shouldn’t be an issue. However what the MOBOs has almost started doing is creating another layer of acts not getting noticed. There are many underground artists not making pop out there that are still not getting a look in. MOBOs needs to revisit the business plan and really incorporate these acts a lot more.

Why was Alexis Jordan who hasn’t lived up to expectations performing? And her debut, year-old song at that?

In fairness I only watched the second hour and I had to say Dionne Bromfield was good (bad makeup though), Emeli Sandi and Boyz 2 Men. Tinchy Stryder really needs to up his stage presence. And let’s get someone else to present. Aleasha Dixon is not the only black / mixed race girl in the UK – how about Angelica Bell?!

I do think that black people can be a bit too critical about our own things but I do also think we have a right to be. I don’t watch award shows anymore period so I can’t really say where MOBOs sits amongst all the others, however for my sins, I do still hope it’s here to stay.

  5. The MOBO’s need never return to Glasgow. I think they have lost their audience. What a dry crowd.

Music of Black Origin in the uk means no Black person wins the top prizes

Imagine if this was the BET awards

  6. @Miss Steele I agree with what your saying but when you say most of the music is pop but has a black influence, you could say that about most types of music rock is of black orgin but they don’t have a catagry for that. I thought the whole point of the MOBOs was to do something different, now I know you have to sell tickets by using pop artists but why not mix it up, with underground artists as well, Rhianna isn’t R&B, Hiphop or Soul her music is straight pop if she was white she wouldn’t even have won a MOBO

  7. People Don’t get me started.

This event lost its soul after the disastrous 1999 event at the Albert Hall.

It was founded with go intentions remember that back in the 1990s British Black Music acts like Loose Ends, Soul II Soul & Sade were winning Grammy’s but could get arrested at the Brits. The UK Music press was very dismissive of the scene thinking it poor imitation of US. As to radio play remember it was only the advent of Kiss FM (Those were the days) that you could hear the music on anything like a regular basis.

So when the awards began it was an acknowledgement that UK didn’t appreciate its own.

Now its just a Record Industry event that uses the rather naive “Urban” acts like N-Dubz, Tinchy Strider & Chupmunk to do all its promontion and then only to award acts signed up to big labels.

No, the events a joke and it even knows it is by host the awards outside London.

    PS
Was it was me or did Alesha screw up wearing that Yellow number. I’ve got a 50″ TV and made her look as fat as ass.

  8. Thank God for common sense, I ignored this like the plague…Wait a cotton picking minute, Do It Like A Dude beat Someone Like You?! We should never doubt J, she called JJ’s wins a while back.

Anyhoo, na only Naija dey win everytime for Best African Act? We no dey carry last-o.

  9. You guys are being too harsh
Its because she put “Man dem, Man dem” in her songs
If I knew that before, I would of made songs with the following titles…
    1) Foot pon shoulder!
    2) Tek time mi bredrin!
    3) Where mi bwoy dem deh?
    4) Ya get me bruv!
    5) Sid down pon it!

All these track will be available to download on Itunes for the measly price of 5p
The debut album will be called “Have I made myself marketable enough!”

  10. hahahahaha! @Terra you are too much hahahah but how real is that though? It is crazy!!!!

@MissSteele: MOBOs confuses me, I really dont get the goal. I guess it is hard for it to make money and be commercial viable as well as true to it’s roots then right?

    I dont know anymore!
