Yesterday I posted the news that Steven Spielberg had signed on to co-produce a Martin Luther King biopic, and that King’s estate had for the first time allowed producers to use his copyrighted intellectual property (his speeches, books etc).
Well it seems only one of King’s offspring gave Spielberg/Dreamworks permission for this to happen!
On Tuesday Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks Studios announced they had purchased the rights to make a film about Dr. Martin Luther King. The problem is Dexter King negotiated the deal without consulting his brother and sister, Martin III and Bernice King, who say they were notified of the sale by email at the same time Spielberg made his announcement. Says Bernice King, “We are taking action. We cannot reveal what it is at this time. Dexter King has entered into an agreement without approval of his shareholders.”
It sounds as if Dexter was hungry to make some change.
