The BBC is to replace a doll based on the Upsy Daisy character from CBeebies TV show In the Night Garden following complaints it is too light-skinned.

A BBC Worldwide spokesman said it had conducted research after getting “a handful” of complaints that the doll had lighter skin than the TV character.

The BBC would now bring out a version with “a darker skin tone”, he said.

Manufacturer Hasbro has been asked to create a different version that will appear in stores from Easter onwards.

The BBC Worldwide spokesman denied newspaper reports the doll had been recalled from stores.  Continue Reading…..

  1. iTS TRUE!!!!
We have this doll and have been argueing over this for months!!!!
They owned up to it – finally!
Did they think if the doll was original colour it may not have been marketable to what western (white) parents, did they not believe darker Daisy Doo was desirable, attractive and good enough quality for their viewers, ultimate profit

    Probably!

  3. Wow! I don’t know anything about this show or doll but it’s obvious that the color is way off. What the hell is up with that?!

    Happy New Year!

  4. seems like lite skin tone is the order of the day…, thats the perfect skin tone according to magazines, majority of music video’s and media in general (IMO) so I’m not suprised by this at all, I have over heard so many ppl talk about having a cute brown baby, not black, just brown, lite brown is what they really mean, so lite skin dolls, well just seems the way forward. (again IMO)

but what pissed me off is this…

“The characters are toys, not representations of people,” … yeah, u tell that to toddlers!

“The culture they collectively embody is unique to the garden setting in which they live.” …ok fair enough.

According to the CBeebies website, Upsy Daisy is “generally a happy and optimistic character”. … what the frick has that got to do with anything, what are they trying to say or point out here??… what is the point of this sentance.

“She loves to dance regardless of the occasion and has her own special bed that has a mind of its own,” … seems like they are pointing out her ‘blackness’ shall we say,… I’m not sure about the point of this comment, statement either, but thought I’d highlight it, hopefully somebody will shed some more light…

    pls…
