Carmen Briscoe-Mitchell, 74, claimed Constance Briscoe, one of the first black women to sit as a judge in Britain, had written a ‘piece of fiction’ in her best-selling memoir, Ugly. She sued part-time judge Ms Briscoe, 51, and publishers Hodder & Stoughton Ltd, who brought out her memoir in January 2006. Both denied libel []
