The Evening Standard reports that Amazon UK has agreed to pull a range of smartphone cases shaped like guns after Duwayne Brooks OBE warned they could lead to Londoners being shot by police.
Brooks who sits on the Met’s firearms and taser reference group, had launched a petition to get the iPhone cases, easily available over the internet, banned in Britain.
He told the Standard:
“One of the senior officers in the group]sent an e-mail to me about these iPhone cases saying officers have been briefed about them.
“For me, that’s just not good enough. We know people have been shot for carrying these cigarette lighter ‘guns’.
“With these iPhone cases, when they are in a back pocket and you’re walking through a supermarket or town centre someone can just ring up and say a couple of youths have got guns.
“Then it all spills into a misunderstanding and someone gets shot – it’s very easy for that to happen.”
So rather than wait for an officer to shoot somebody who’s carrying an iPhone case, let’s get them banned so Amazon can’t sell them in Britain.
“We don’t want them to be popular in London – or any other major cities.”
Why would they design such a problematic case?
Well done Duwayne.
