Jamaican Alia Atkinson has become the first black woman to win a world swimming title, after she triumphed in the 100m breaststroke at the world short-course championships in Doha on Saturday.
The 25-year-old claimed the title and equalled Ruta Meilutyte’s world record of 1min 02.36sec in the process – although under governing body FINA rules this still equates to a new record.
It looks like black people can swim after all.
Congratulations Alia.

Uh…. Black people could always swim. People swim all over Jamaica just like they do in the coast of the african continent . We just didn’t see as a national sport. Alia make all of us swimmers proud.I hope people will stop thinking I’m just swimming to “relax” my muscles and that I should keep busy with football or Basket ball.
Proud swimmer and boat owner.
I was being sarcastic. Racists used to say we couldn’t swim because our bones were too heavy.
