Labour’s David Lammy has spoken out about the lack of cinemas in London.
According to The Evening Standard the MP for a struggling and angry Tottenham undertook research which found 27 out of the 73 constituencies in London had no cinema.
An INCENSED Lammy said:
“It’s as if poor people have been written out of the script when it comes to cinema in London.
“It’s unacceptable that there are still so many constituencies across the capital where people are expected to travel into the centre to access cinema.
“The British Film Institute and the Arts Council that control funding for arts and film have to do much more to correct this. When you look at how much the Arts Council spends on opera — surely a small slice of that redirected could go a long way.” Constituencies in Ealing, Brent, Tottenham, Walthamstow, Dagenham, Lewisham, Tooting and Mitcham were among those with no cinema.
In response to this disgusted Tottenham resident and Mad News reader Vanessa Wallace said:
People are losing their homes, there are benefits sanctions, support services are being cut, food banks are closing, people are struggling, but all Lammy wants to talk about is cinemas?
Then again I suppose people won’t be so worried about low employment opportunities, whether or not their children are safe going to and from school and whether they can pay this months rent, now that their housing benefit has been reduced due to the government changes to benefits, as long as they can go and see ‘Despicable Me 2’ at a venue that is on their doorstep!
I for one have been losing sleep for years over the absence of a cinema in Lewisham. Travelling to Peckham and the West End was beginning to take its toll. It has troubled me deeply but now I can rest easy because the lack of a good cinema in my borough is at the top of David’s agenda.
FINALLY David is tackling the important issues.
Well done David. Now let’s all stand up and give the man a round of applause.
On a serious note, while members of his constituency are facing real issues on a daily basis that HE was voted in to tackle ( e.g. healthcare, education, crime, police brutality etc), David chooses to sit in his office doing pointless cinema “research”. He receives a salary for doing this???
The man is not serious.
Rest In Peace Bernie Grant.
