Comedian and actor Lenny Henry has written a one-off BBC drama based on his teenage years and his rise to fame.
The drama titled Danny And The Human Zoo tells the story of a teenage impressionist growing up in a Jamaican family in 1970s Dudley (Birmingham).
Lenny who grew up in Dudley launched his career starring in the controversial Black And White Minstrel Show and later appeared on the hit talent show New Faces.
When asked about the up and coming drama Lenny said:
“I’m so excited about bringing my fictional teen memoir to the nation. I’ve crammed the first two years of a very long career into 90 minutes – it’s gonna rock.
“I think, although it’s not exactly what happened, that we’ll get a strong sense of what it might have been like for a young black kid from Dudley to be suddenly hurled into the maelstrom of this business we call show.”
Congratulations Lenny.

Danny and The Human Zoo? Is this Zoo supposed to describe the Jamaican family he grew up in? We know how ‘they’ like to equate us to animals especially primates. He couldn’t come up with a better title than that? But then again what do you expect from someone who was in the Black and White Minstrel Show.
Looooool, yes very strange name for the show, i guess he is going to come out and say he never choose it as usual.
I side eyed the title too at first. But I think ‘The Human Zoo’ refers to the entertainment industry.
