The life of late Big Brother star Jade Goody is to be turned in to an opera titled ‘and the Crowd (wept)‘. The production will chart her rise to fame and her death from cervical cancer at the age of 27 in 2009.
Writer Afsaneh Gray told the Mail Online,
She was inspired to write an opera on Jade while working in an office as medical secretary.
She said women in the office were constantly pouring over Jade Goody’s life as it was splashed across gossip magazines, and everybody always had an opinion on it.
Some ranged from support for the Big Brother star, others were less compassionate and far more critical accusing her of being ‘racist’ from her various public outbursts.
Realising the strength of feeling people had on such public figures, Ms Gray decided to write an opera on ‘celebrity’ and focus on the tragic life of Jade.
‘I like to do things that have some kind of contemporary resonance’. It’s important it’s not just about Jade Goody, it’s about celebrity.’ Continue Reading….
It is still hard to believe the level of fame that Jade Goody achieved during her short life. Jade was a Big Brother contestant in 2003, she came third, but went on to make millions thanks to various lucrative endorsement and TV deals. I think she was the only contestant that became a millionaire off the back of that show.
Everything started to go down hill when she appeared on ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ in 2007. It became obvious that fame and fortune had gone to her head. The way she treated Indian actress Shilpa Shetty (egged on by her cronies in the house Danielle Lloyd, and Jo O’Meara) was just appalling. Up until this incident I did not have a problem with Jade, I quite liked her. But after witnessing the bullying and racism that was directed towards Shilpa my opinion of her changed.
Then not long after the ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ fall out she was diagnosed with cervical cancer and then broke down and announced the news during a short stint as a contestant on Big Brother India.
From the moment Jade walked out of the Big Brother house in 2003 her life was a roller coaster ride right up until she died in March 2009.
When I first came across the news about this opera I thought to myself ‘now is this necessary Afsaneh?’, but it might actually be interesting.
Rest In Peace Jade Goody.

She became a millionaire not because of big brother, it was because she was dying. She and some leeches saw an opportunity in dying and took it. That’s when the endorsements became endless. I will never forget when someone said that certain celebrities are much more worth dead than alive.
She made over a million while she was well. She had TV deals, book deals, magazine deals, a perfume, appearance fee etc. Jade earned a ton of money long before she was diagnosed with cancer. Then after the Shilpa Shetty drama she lost lucrative deals. But then when she became ill the money started rolling in again up until her death.
Oh, okay. I was wondering why she had gone back for the second time when things turned for the worst. I guess she wanted to get more after getting a lot from the first time. It looks like she is still making money even in death. They will be collecting royalties.
She didn’t need to return the second time and if I remember correctly wasn’t keen at first. But the fee was huge and I think C4 liked the idea of a former BB contestant going back in as a celebrity.. Along with her offkey mother and dimwit boyfriend.
I don’t see what the problem was in her making as much money as she could especially when she was dying. She did it for her children to make sure in her absence she could provide them with a better life than she had. I would do the same for my daughter and anyone who would vilify me in death because of it could kick rocks. If it’s the only positive thing I’d have to say about Jade Goody she came across as a great mother to her two boys. I’m happy that she was able to experience the joys of motherhood even though her life was cut short.
