BBC commentator John Inverdale was forced to issue an apology to 2013 Wimbledon women’s champion Marion Bartoli after his rude remarks about the star angered Radio 5 Live listeners.

Inverdale said:

“I just wonder if her dad, because he has obviously been the most influential person in her life, did say to her when she was 12, 13, 14 maybe, ‘listen, you are never going to be, you know, a looker.

“‘You are never going to be somebody like a Sharapova, you’re never going to be 5ft 11, you’re never going to be somebody with long legs, so you have to compensate for that.

After the backlash he responded with:

“The point I was trying to make, in a rather ham-fisted kind of way, was that in a world where the public perception of tennis players is that they’re all 6ft tall Amazonian athletes, Marion – who is the Wimbledon champion – bucks that trend.”

He said she was “a fantastic example to all young people that it’s attitude and will and determination together, obviously, with talent that, in the end, does get you to the top”.

“So I have apologised to Marion by letter if any offence was caused and I do hope that we can leave the matter there now,” he added.

He had earlier said he had poked fun “in a nice way at how she looks”, adding: “She is an incredible role model for people who aren’t born with all the attributes of natural athletes”.

While Marion was out there on centre court becoming a world champion this fool was sat in a BBC studio talking a load of offensive crap.

So according to John, Marion is unattractive because she doesn’t have long blond hair, blue eyes and isn’t 5 ft 11?  Who does this man think he is to pass judgement on a young woman’s looks during a live broadcast?

Newsflash John when the world looks at you none of us see actor Henry Cavill. All we see is a dried up, middle-aged BBC correspondent with bad hair who was lucky enough to get a job on television.

Moose Inverdale should do himself a favour and stick to talking about sport in future.

Congratulations Marion Bartoli.

  1. I wonder if he is the same one who was making snide remarks about Serena’s reactions at Wimbledon.

It’s that very reason that Sharapova is the highest earning woman tennis player when she has less titles than some.

  2. Yet Sharpova is very overrated in term of looks. no one would have ever made that type of comment about a male Tennis player.

  3. Also I hate when people do like being seen as an attractive woman is some sort of achievement.

  4. Her response was great, they should stick that up on the top of the doors of Wimbledon.

But it is funny how tennis fans/media have been quiet praising the girl who won but they were going on about Sabine Lisicki about how nice and wonderful she is.

  5. Here we go again, more thoughtless, stupid remarks from incompetent presenters. Watching Wimbledon over the last fortnight I have heard so many off colour and un PC remarks that could be called sexist and racist. I am not sure whether it is these presenters showing their true colours or because they are completely inept for the job and struggle to find anything decent to say so come out with pure trite. Either way the BBC really needs to look at their roster of ‘presenters’ and start replacing them with people who can actually do the job. 90% of the people they recruit to ‘cover’ Wimbledon are awful.

  6. British Brainwashing Corporation, lets look at what BBC really stands for by its very own actions. “Moose Inverdale”, lol, love it Jan.
