Singer Lauryn Hill has been sentenced in the US state of New Jersey to three months in jail for tax evasion.
The Grammy-winning singer, 37, also faces three months of home confinement, after pleading guilty last year.
Hill failed to pay taxes on about $1.8m (£1.2m) of earnings between 2005-07.
In a statement to the judge, Hill said she intended to pay the taxes but could not after ending her music career. It is not clear when Hill will report to prison.
“I needed to be able to earn so I could pay my taxes, without compromising the health and welfare of my children, and I was being denied that,” Hill told the judge in court on Monday. Continue Reading….
Hill told US Magistrate Madeline Arleo, “I am a child of former slaves who had a system imposed on them,” I had an economic system imposed on me. There were veiled threats, there was blacklisting. “I was told, ‘That’s how it goes, it comes with the territory’. I came to be perceived as a cash cow and not a person. When people capitalise on a persona, they forget there is a person in there.”
Lauryn should thank her lucky stars she was only sentenced to 3 months in jail because she was facing a much longer sentence.
What a sorry state of affairs.

She didn’t and still doesn’t have the money. You can become a star overnight, but you need to keep it up to keep the income coming. She left and so did the money. And she is not the first nor the last.
Something about her going in prison really gnaws a at me…..
Not sure about her argument to be honest. She was working within the system and earned her money, but did not put any of that income aside to pay taxes, and spent it all. I’m sure that’s it in a nutshell.
I am confused they confirmed she paid most of taxes back…. I am not sure why she’s still going to jail tho?
Exactly @nubiahbella She’s paid most of it back, so she should be given an opportunity to pay the rest before imposing a jail term on a mother of 6!
