UK FILM: SKET (TRAILER)

Up and coming urban flick SKET (yes that’s right SKET *shaking my head*) ‘is a fast paced urban retribution thriller set in the badlands of East London‘.

When a young woman is cruelly and indiscriminately attacked by a notorious gang led by the violent Trey, her little 16 year old sister Kayla wants revenge and will stop at nothing to get it, even if it means joining a rival girl gang led by the volatile and damaged man-hating Danielle.

________

Judging by the trailer it’s your usual UK “urban” film fare – London, gangs , violence, road man antics, “urban” music and street slang.

And the film title is so unnecessary. I despair sometimes I really do.

For those of you who don’t know what the word SKET means its an old skool Jamaican slang term that describes a ‘loose woman’. Like with most Jamaican slang terms it’s being beaten to death by today’s British inner city youth and now film director Nirpal Bhogal has latched on to the word in hopes it will lure the youngsters in to the cinema.

SKET also stars Ashley Walters and opens nationwide on the 28th October.

Your thoughts please…. Will you be going to see SKET when it’s released?

UPDATE:  Since the release of the SKET trailer people have had a lot to say including it’s director.

As usual in the UK if you dare to question what’s being sold to the public in the name of entertainment and don’t partake in the hype, you are then viewed with suspicion and automatically labelled “negative”.

Anyway from what I have been told the film does not depict young women whoring their way through scenes with a succession of different men and isn’t about young women living a loose lifestyle.  “So why use an old skool Jamaican slang term to sell your movie to the masses? (Which will probably result in racist so-called ‘historians’ like David Starkey once again blaming Jamaican culture for the corruption of the UK’s youth” (Quote via blogger Miss Lala) and then run with such a misleading title?

  1. Okay, well the premise is not too bad. Girls getting their own back on the bad boys.

What gets me is this is another UK urban movie where the lead is white, and it looks like the baddest bad boys are black.

  2. if the Title makes no sense am I right to hasten a guest that the film makes no sense. Plus with all the talk of girl gangs and girl knife crime on the increase should urban flicks be like this.

Next there will be a film called Leggo Beast ta raatid.

  3. This is pure predictive programming. No doubt that this so called “director” received some sort of government grant to wack out this nonsense. I know for a fact that the government will fund anything that brings a radical message and helps to radically alter the culture into more bottom barrel debauchery and reprobation.

Yet again, the Middle Eastern man making merchandise of the so called Negro in some way, shape or form. If they are not selling you fried chicken or weaves and other hair products, then its a straight up laughing stock manoeuvre just like the Black face back in the 50s. Why Negroes would even put themselves forward for this trash is beyond me. You would have thought that Asher D should have known better about negative stereotypes from his So Solid days.

The thing that ticks me off is the youth go out and copy this nonsense and moretime it is the adults who get confronted by these Topgun, can’t die, charged up militants on the road. Did we really expect any other behaviour from an Asian in relation to ourselves?

  4. There will obviously pure stuck up arrogant people hating on the film, because they themselves have nothing better to do with their lives.if your sitting there thinking this film is no good and will only destruct society to an even worse state, then there’s no point of you even having a say,if you aint got nothing positive to say.. And its allways the really stuck up stubborn people that are complaining.get a life

  5. Hush B, really needs to hush. I’m guessing this person has some link to the film, someone that was in it or likes anything with a roadman supporting cast. Based on the structure of their sentences it seems Sket may be just the type of film for them.

  6. @ hush b

“if your sitting there thinking this film is no good and will only destruct society to an even worse state, then there’s no point of you even having a say,if you aint got nothing positive to say..”

On the contrary, more fool me if I do not open my mouth and lodge an objection to something that will be destructive on the society’s youth. This “haven’t got anything positive to say” slogan is a dead duck, if people cannot take constructive criticism of their works, they are the ones who should retreat into the shadows.

As usual, there will always be folks who will support stupidity and blockard behaviour as if it is mother’s milk without looking at the wider picture. Roman empire stadium foolishness at its height and the sheeple cannot seem to get enough of it. Lets just continue to let bad influences influence and not say a word about it……………………D-U-M-B!

  7. I wish the film all the luck but this and other films like this paint a very 1 dimensional view of ‘urban’ youth. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and actually any comment good or bad is good promotion for the film. I probably wont be watching it and why call it ‘Sket’ if the name alone doesn’t depict the message?… to cause controversy….

  8. Just very very bored of seeing these types of movies being pushed to the masses. Even though the cast is prodominantly white, the script lends itself to micking a culture which is generally associated with black culture, hence the title of the movie, Sket (an abbreviation of the Jamaican slang word “Sketel”, meaning “Whore, Slut, Slag, and any other derogatory term to name a loose woman.)
So it’s no surprise that you have idiotic middle aged white historians like David Starkey (believe me, there are many people up and downthe UK who think just like him), thinking that black culture, more specifically Jamaica culture is responsible for the deterioration of UK youth, when we have film makers using a negative slang term to promote their “piss n tell” movie.
If it’s a UK film, and you really have to use a derogotory term to promote this crap, why not use a negative slang term from the UK. God knows, there’s more than enough. But no, once again, lets jump on this “hype” of mimicking a culture we know nothing about, pick at the negative of the culture, as it “speaks to the youth” of the UK!
    Do me a favor!
To be honest, its no surprise that this has happend, as we allow outside forces to come into our culture, pick it apart and present it to the masses as they wish for it to be shown. I think we are the only race that likes to revel in the negative sides of us. There is NO WAY in hell this would happen to any other culture in the world, but because we have turned into a bunch pussies, we sit back and take this crap. Our ancestors must be rolling in their graves to see the legacy of nonchelant, materialistic, lost, ass licky licky bunch of wasteful individuals with no sense of community we have become.
None of the positive that we have to offer is allowed to be shown, and if we do want to show that side of us to the mainstream media, were told “that’s not black enough!” by the people that own our culture. Yes, that’s right, I said “by the people that own our culture!”, as it certainly isn’t us (do we own any media companies, record labels, magazines etc? err, no!). We just readily sell our culture to the highest bidder in the hope of becoming rich! Rich dont get you nowhere, if we had any sense we focus on becoming “wealthy”, as wealth is what sustains you for generations to come. Holding on to your culture and not allowing it to be pimped, gets you respect from others
It comes as no surprised that this tomfoolery bafoonery movie like “Sket” gets the light of day.
I’m sick of this backward shit, UK so called “Urban” movie industry I’m done with all you, bunch of sell out MOFOs!

“if your sitting there thinking this film is no good and will only destruct society to an even worse state, then there’s no point of you even having a say,if you aint got nothing positive to say.. And its allways the really stuck up stubborn people that are complaining”

You want to talk about positivity, yet this film does nothing but promote negative nonsense. Far be it for anyone to complain when we have a a barrage of movies that want to depict life in “urban” communities to have people looking like they live like ferrel animals. Is this what you call a positive movement? I think you nees to get a life and perhaps read a book in the meantime! KMT

  10. I’m tired of these kind of films, what happened now the Bill has stopped they gotta bring these tired films out, no offense but they’re all the same and all roll into one, with Ashley Walters in everyone it’s time people be more creative, does anyone even remember, talk about or even care about Shank?

It’s like the UK is behind they done a film like these films years ago in the US called Kids.

If you wanna do a ghetto film do something different, I recently watched a film done in Birmingham which was a ghetto film but they were creative with it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Du-SepwUakQ&list=FL9aQsP3I2K65S4BSp0Z_Csw&index=43

  11. ‘Sket’ is not going to go out to the masses! It’s no big-budget, Transformers kind of movie that everyone goes to see. It will go to Arts Centres, and government subsidised cinemas, and the only people who go to see it will be middle class white graduates who like to think they know what’s going on. And even the film makers can’t get out of their London environment- there’s violence going on all over the country. And again, why is a girl gang so much worse than a boy gang? And why is a sister out for revenge so much worse than a brother out for revenge?
