Many contestants wore scowls when Nikole Churchill became Hampton University's first non-black Homecoming Queen
Cultural history will be made tonight in a college town in southern Virginia when a lissome 22-year-old student in a tiara hosts a car show and singing contest modelled on American Idol. Nikole Churchill will look good, and on the evidence of the past few days will handle the microphone with aplomb.
However, she will have to be ready for hecklers. She is the first non-black Homecoming Queen in her university’s history and not everyone is happy that she won the title. Her victory this month triggered a beauty pageant walkout and veiled accusations of black racism from the aggrieved new Miss Hampton University. She also wrote a long public letter to President Obama, saying: “I feel as though you could relate to my situation.”
Hampton University, at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay, is one of more than 80 historically black colleges in the US whose student populations are only gradually coming to reflect the diversity they exist to promote, largely because non-blacks have been slow to apply to them.
Ms Churchill was hardly known to the university’s main student body until she made the shortlist of ten contestants for a title that involves a year of public duties. A panel of five judges named her the winner after a two-hour pageant in which she spoke of the importance of mentoring girls on self-esteem and “body image”, and performed a Hawaiian hula in a pink-and-white swimsuit.

Maybe he secretly did the “Hawaiian Hula in a pink-and-white swimsuit”. **Note to self: Ask Verbz, if Obama really did that.**
Why does that photo remind me of ‘cinderella’ the movie and book? LOL
I wanna see a picture of all the contestants to she if she really was the the most beautiful, if so, than fairs fairs…, those two sisters on the right of the photo need to let it go! lol.
how can we complain about being excluded and treated unfairly in so many area’s then turn around and do the same, it beats fighting the cause.
LMAO @ FR, you want to see the rest of the contestants? You have the best four up there luv. LOL
oh dear, the best four, LOL, apart from the sister on the left, perhaps the judges hands was tied lol.
LMAO, oh dear
I don’t know why these peagants are still funded. They are so full of artificiality in every sense of the word. I don’t care who wins, it’s not my thing.
So, these white journalists know what racism is after all and choose to ignore it on a daily basis when they are not affected directly yet they could call out on it if they wanted to. What a revelation! Lol
I’m going to agree w/FR. She’s gorgeous, and clearly much prettier than the two girls on the right, and slightly prettier than the one on the left.
I also agree that any complaining, if in fact this contest was truly judged fairly, based on race is ridiculous. How the hell can we, as a people, cry about exclusion yet turn around and do the same thing?
She is quite hot, the winner…I wonder if she’s a “darkskinned White girl”?
PS: A “DWG” is a Caucasian woman that, if you close your eyes and just listen to her speak, is virtually sonically indistinguishable from a Black girl.
I like the way they are able to say that it is racism period when it is done to a white person but when it is the other way round, then we are paranoid and it is up for debate and they have a right to be and say and it is their home not ours. 😉
@ Sundance, a dark skinned white girl, LOL, that had me creasin’! can u highlight any ‘DWG’s that maybe famous so I can get a visual idea of what u mean, and how dark skinned hehe…i.e Angelina (she has the lips too, maybe the walk too?)
@ Dera, I like your point, thinking about it, The Times, isn’t that a British paper, and they are picking up on this issue across the pond, oh, Now racism is a problem huh?…I googled the pagent and all sorts of news reports from Chicago to NY came up, funny how when it’s on the other foot it makes big news, smh!
but since the script has been flipped, …. Just wondering, what do u all think about the way black comedians ridicule white folk in the Us???… don’t get me wrong, I think it is hilarious at times, but I been thinking if it was the other way round, would it be sooo funny, and would it be accepted, and in regards to accepting it as it is, is it because maybe white folks feel guilty??
I can only think of chris rock the funny man. He knows how to drive a point accross but gently and funnily. Being ridiculed is never easy when you are on the recieving end but it’s how it’s done and with what intention. It’s expected of the white race to be racist, still a power thing the way i see it. But if other races dare fall out of line or retaliate, all hell breaks loose. Because we have experienced racism over the years, we are expected to understand how it feels and be more sympathetic towards others that go through it that are not us, but the effects it has had on us as generations have come and gone are and will never be acknowledged. The worst enemies are those who say, get over it and move on, things have changed when they well know things have not changed and will not change any time soon.
I don’t know about guilt FR. What i have noticed is that these people have been taught about their history in a way that it has been glorified and the opposite is true for us. Whatever happened in the past was a NECESSARY EVIL for their survival, not that it has changed to this day but hey. And they are proud of all the achievements their ancestors achieved. Even slavery which is the root cause of racism IMO.
@fr :
A “darkskinned white girl” doesn’t necessarily have a specific look…she CAN, but not always.
She’s usually someone who either grew up around/identifies with Black culture, and has integrated herself into it. She knows all the slang, mannerisms and nuances of the Black experience, and when she speaks, she sounds JUST like a Black girl.
There’s an American West Coast rapper named Murs who can explain it MUCH better than I :
@ any rate, I’ll bet this chick is a dwg…
Hello everyone, She is very beautiful and so are the young black ladies beside her. We must remember that we must be color blind and find the true beauty in the women not in her skin. If we start down this path of reverse racism then we have failed completely as a black race reaching for something new. Let us embrace her and love her as if she was our own, because she stands there it lets us know that she is willing to reach accross the table and embrace our culture or views and our style. This says a lot for this young white women that can’t be said for many of us making comments about her and not in support of her.
Congratulations Nikole:-)
A lot of the people in the civil right movement were white also. Don’t let your hang ups in life influence you to be cruel to another person. She is still human and has feelings just like you. Lest we forget black folks come in all shades. OR should I bring up that some of you still have a problem with another person of color being to light or dark. This is really ignorant and no different than the racist thinking of Jim Crow. If you have nothing good to say you should be quiet. If that it’s good enough for you pray for her. Just remember it could be you up there. Find something to do instead of hating on Nickole.
The two of you that is Jeffery and Nefertitii missed the point and bad. lol
