The SS Empire Windrush came to Tilbury in 1948 and heralded the start of a modern, multicultural Britain. The 22nd June 2013 will mark the 65th Anniversary of this historic event. These special events, inspired by the Windrush, will celebrate the achievements and legacy of this generation.

Join our celebrations at St. Katherine’s Pier and experience an afternoon cruise along the River Thames before arriving at the London Cruise Terminal at Tilbury, emulating the landing of the Windrush at the same port 65 years ago. A special celebration 3 course dinner infused with Caribbean and African cuisine will follow, complemented by an evening of entertainment, live music and a special awards ceremony.

A day for all the family at the London Cruise terminal at Tilbury. Experience many cultural aspects inspired by the Windrush Generation. Activities include: Calypso, special tours of the Windrush Exhibitions, musical workshops, gospel choirs and dance performances and a selection of Afro Caribbean cuisine available as well as much more!

This anniversary and celebration is bitter sweet when I think about the hardships and racism faced by many who boarded The Empire Windrush all those years ago in search of a better life in the “mother country”. They had no idea what they were walking in to when they stepped off that ship.
