NIVEA’S ‘RE-CIVILIZE’ PRINT AD CAMPAIGN CALLED “RACIST”, COMPANY APOLOGISES

August 19, 2011 11 comments

Haha – Oh dear those marketing executives are in trouble again.

Via The Los Angeles Times

Nivea’s “Look like you give a damn” campaign: Does it contain a deliberately racist suggestion that black people aren’t civilized or an unintentional gaffe by the skin care company’s marketing team?

The print ad in question features a clean-shaven black man grasping the longer hair (an Afro) on a bearded mask of his own face, preparing to throw it away. The phrase “Re-civilize yourself” is boldly emblazoned over the image.

After Facebook users posted their complaints and pictures of themselves with Afros on the company’s Facebook wall (it all goes down on Facebook and Twitter these days) Nivea issued this apology.

Thank you for caring enough to give us your feedback about the recent ‘Re-civilized’ NIVEA FOR MEN ad. This ad was inappropriate and offensive. It was never our intention to offend anyone, and for this we are deeply sorry. This ad will never be used again. Diversity and equal opportunity are crucial values of our company.

I wonder what spokesperson singer Rihanna has to say about all this.

Your thoughts please?

UK NEWS: THE IPCC ISSUE NEW STATEMENT OVER SMILEY CULTURE’S DEATH

August 19, 2011 1 comment

Smiley Culture died during a police raid inside his Surrey home.

Earlier this year Reggae star Smiley Culture (real name David Emanuel) died during a police raid inside his home on March 15 in Surrey and according to the MET died from a stab wound to the chest while “making a cup of tea”.

This tragic and highly suspect incident is currently being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) but because of the lack of progress and concerns from the community/Emanuel family the IPCC Commissioner for the south-east Mike Franklin has issued this statement.

‘Our team of investigators has been working hard to gather and analyse all available evidence. I understand that people are frustrated they do not have access to the ‘full story’ yet.

‘It is very frustrating for me not to be able to simply put on public record everything we have discovered so far. But we have to accept all the evidence we gather during our investigation will be heard at the inquest into Mr Emanuel’s death and we cannot risk prejudicing that process.

‘Her Majesty’s Coroner for Surrey has confirmed that the inquest will be heard by a jury. That is the right arena for the evidence to be tested in public.

‘It is also important to understand that there are two sets of criminal proceedings which are ongoing and it is unlikely that the inquest will be able to be heard before they are concluded.

‘I have met with representatives of Mr Emanuel’s family and their lawyer to provide an investigation update and to try to address the questions and concerns. I will continue to do this, as well as meeting with the Community Reference Group.

‘However, I have a responsibility to balance the need to share information, with the need to avoid adversely affecting other judicial processes, and I ask for continued patience and assure you that our findings will be made public as soon as we can legally and legitimately do so.’

Rest In Peace David Emanuel aka Smiley Culture.

UK TV: CELEBRITY BIG BROTHER 2011 LAUNCHES ON CHANNEL 5

"Celebrities" get to know each other in the Big Brother House

Last night I tuned in to the launch of Celebrity Big Brother 2011 (now on Channel 5) and laughed, cringed and laughed again.

Before last night’s show there were rumour’s flying all over the place that singer Bobby Brown, former Baywatch babe Pamela Anderson and actor Charlie Sheen would be entering the house this year, but no such luck!

Check out the full “celebrity” line up below.

Amy Childs – Amy found fame on The Only Way Is Essex and has now left the hit show to appear on Celebrity Big Brother. She is actually quite likeable and stands a good chance of winning.

Sally Bercow – Sally is married to Commons Speaker John Bercow who is totally against her appearing on the show. Her decision to enter the house  could make or break their marriage.

Jedward – Twins John and Edward Grimes make me laugh. I admire their hustle. They are focused on making as much money as they can, while they still can. They have got nothing to lose.

Pamela Bach – Pamela is “famous” for being married to David Hasslehoff and then divorcing him.

Kerry Katona – At this point Kerry should just focus on getting a normal 9-5 job and needs to leave the world of entertainment alone.

Tara Reid. I remember when Tara was a Hollywood A-lister. Where did it all go wrong?  When she entered the house last night she just looked lost and confused.  It was actually painful to watch.

Darryn Lyons – Millionaire photographer who runs/owns the famous Paparazzi Picture Agency. Darryn has nothing to lose by appearing on the show.

Paddy Doherty – Star of the hit documentary series My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. This is going to be interesting…..

Bobby Sabel -  Bobby is a model but nobody had a clue who he was when host Brian Dowling announced his name, and still had no clue when he walked on to the stage.

Lucien Laviscount – Lucien is an actor and he has appeared in Coronation Street and Waterloo Road.  The female viewers are already drooling all over him (lol).
