SMILEY CULTURE MARCH FOR HUMAN RIGHTS AND JUSTICE FOR ALL (APRIL 16TH – LONDON)

April 15, 2011 1 comment

Reggae star Smiley Culture (real name David Emmanuel) died during a poilce raid inside his home in March, and the Metropolitan Police still haven’t released much information regarding his death.  They however would like the public to believe their story that David stabbed himself to death while making a cup of tea during the raid.

The Emmanuel family has organised a march for justice which will take tomorrow. See details below.

Smiley Culture March For Human Rights And Justice For All.
Saturday 16th April 2011
Assemble at 12 noon
Southbank Club, 124-130 Wandsworth Road, SW8 2DL
Proceeding to New Scotland Yard, 8-10 Broadway, SW1H 0BH

A request from David’s nephew Merlin Emmanuel:

On behalf of the Emmanuel family, we would like to stress that this campaign is a non violent campaign for justice. Failure to adhere to our policy will result in our efforts being compromised. So I say specifically to those with an alternate agenda, respect our wishes and stand with us in peace and solidarity or stay away. Thank you.

Rest In Peace David Emmanuel aka Smiley Culture.

VIDEO: JESSIE J – NOBODY’S PERFECT

April 14, 2011 12 comments

Check out the video for Jessie J’s new single Nobody’s Perfect.

The Track -  There is nothing particularly outstanding about this single. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, yes Jessie can sing but I still don’t see what all the hype is about.

The Video – Judging from the Alice In Wonderland inspired video, no expense was spared for “woman of the moment” Jessie.

Your thoughts please. Hit or Miss?

UK EVENT REVIEW: THE LAUNCH OF AML AMEEN’S AMEENDREAM ENTERTAINMENT AND SCREENING (LONDON)

April 14, 2011 3 comments

Last night I attended the official launch of British actor Aml Ameen’s film and television production company, AmeenDream Entertainment held at UK film body headquarters BAFTA. (Yeah that’s right “haters” Miss Mad News was swanning around BAFTA headquarters! Deal with it! *sarcasm*.

After starring in the hit film Kidulthood,TV drama The Bill and other TV/stage projects, Aml set up production company AmeenDream in 2009 ‘with a clear mission to deliver stories that entertain, provoke thought and inspire, as well as providing alternative representations of youth and the urban community in the UK’.

The three films showcased last night, The Pick Up, Special Delivery and Drink, Drugs & KFC, were each impressive pieces of work. Special Delivery a story about a post woman who embarks on a strange yet sensual love affair was beautifully shot and Drink, Drugs and KFC a story about a group of friends growing up in London, starring a fresh bunch of talented young black-British actors was both very funny and poignant at times.

As for The Pick Up (Aml’s debut short film) a film about friends attempting to pick up women in a trendy London nightclub, I remember Aml tweeting about organising rehearsals for this project over a year ago and then going on to release the trailer on YouTube months later.   Now having watched the entire short, I must say that it was much better than I thought it would be.

The quality of acting displayed in each short film also surprised me.  I’ve noticed over the years that when it comes to casting for “Urban” films a lot of roles are given to random individuals who lack acting ability (which is glaringly obvious) and therefore have no business appearing on the silver screen. But thankfully this is not the case when it comes to these projects.  The young cast featured have great potential and get the Mad News thumbs up.

I have been following Aml’s career since he left The Bill and followed the developments of his production company (via Twitter) since its inception simply because,

1)      I like to keep you all up to date with what’s going on within UK culture and feel I have a duty to keep a close eye on what many of our Black British stars are up to career wise.

2)      I’m just very nosey.

It was good seeing a suited and booted Aml on the BAFTA stage talking passionately about his work, his team, students and hopes for the future in front of his peers, colleagues, friends, family, students and nobodies like myself.  He has achieved a lot in a relatively short space of time and I wish him continued success.

More information about the three short films.

The Pick Up - A fast-paced comical drama which catapults the audience straight into the heart of London nighlife.  It serves as a pilot for a potential television series. The first six episodes of the series are currently being written with a principal cast of British actors from multicultural backgrounds.

Special Delivery -  A story of a post woman (Kamara Bacchus) who is bored of her life, trapped in a mundane routine. When the possibility of a new route arises, it changes her path and she finds herself going down a road of adventure and embarking on an unusual love affair. It is written and stars Kamara Bacchus (Dr Who, The Bill), and is directed by Geoff Searle (Madness in the First Degree). This is an artsy piece shot with a strong emphasis on capturing beautiful London locations.

Drink, Drugs and KFC - has been shot as a short cinematic piece, with plans to extend it into full feature length big screen movie later on. Written by Aml, the script was inspired by films he grew up watching such as The Sandlot, The Goonies and House Party, which reflect the adventure of growing up, in this case in London, and including the trials, tribulations, bravado and camaraderie that come with that.

Aml Ameen

Like actor Idris Elba before him Aml has relocated to Los Angeles and now stars in US drama Harry’s Law alongside Oscar-winning actress Kathy Bates.  The show is currently being broadcast in the US on NBC, and there are plans to air the show here later on in the year.

VIDEO: MAN CAUGHT UP IN ‘PUBLIC LEWDNESS’ DRAMA WITH HOT 97 DJ SPEAKS OUT

April 13, 2011 5 comments

DJ Mister Cee (real name Calvin Lebrun)

Lawrence Campbell the young man who was allegedly caught performing a sex act on Hot 97 DJ / producer Mister Cee (real name Calvin Lebrun) in a parked car last month, has decided to speak out and attempts to set the record straight….

Lawrence looks and sounds like a complete fool. Intead of jumping in front of a camera, milking the situation and rambling nonsense, he should have just kept his mouth shut.

Who paid him off? If this video was made to take the heat off Mister Cee and to once again portray NYPD as liars then I’m afraid it failed.

And Lawrence calls himself a “drag queen”??? He looks a mess. RuPaul must be shaking his head in shame.

UK NEWS: MEN JAILED FOR HOXTON GUN MURDER OF 16 YEAR OLD GIRL

April 12, 2011 4 comments

Victim: Agnes Suina-Inakoju

Leon Dunkley (22) and Mohammed Smoured (21) were each sentenced today for the murder of 16-year-old Agnes Suina-Inakoju.

Via The Evening Standard

A girl who dreamed of making it to Oxford University from a London council estate was shot dead as she chatted to friends – the innocent victim of a gang feud.

Two 22-year-olds in hoodies cycled up to a takeaway shop and fired a submachine pistol through the window at members of a rival gang inside. They did not bother to check who else was there, nor did they care.

This afternoon they were sentenced to 32 years each for the murder of Agnes Sina-Inakoju, 16, who was shot through the neck. The judge told them they would be in their fifties before they could be released, adding: “Not only did you take the life of a young woman of great promise, you destroyed a family’s happiness and destroyed your own lives.”

Gunman Leon Dunkley and his lookout Mohammed Smoured, both from Hackney, are members of the London Fields Boys gang. CCTV film of the shooting played to the jury was described as “shocking, graphic and hideously violent”. Seconds before the attack Agnes is seen playing with the hair of a friend.

Another friend ducked when she saw the killers coming but Agnes only had time to look up. She fell to the ground clutching her face. Smoured later joked about how she “dropped”.

A teenager told the court he heard Mohammed Smoured talking a few days after the killing. The gang were laughing and “Smoured said something about someone being shot in the neck and said the way they dropped was funny”.

Scum bags Leon Dunkley and Mohammed Smoured

Is the violent death of an innocent 16-year-old girl still funny now Mohammed???? Have fun slopping out at Her Majesty’s Pleasure for the next 32 years you evil waste of space.

This pair of lowlife vermin deserve to be wiped off the face of the earth.

Rest In Peace Agnes Suina-Inakoju.

UK NEWS: 2009 X-FACTOR WINNER JOE MCELDERRY SUPPORTS JEDWARD IN CONCERT

April 12, 2011 2 comments

2009 X-Factor winner Joe McElderry

It’s been reported by tabloid rag The Sun that 2009 X-Factor winner Joe McElderry was the support act for fellow X-Factor contestants/clowns Jedward (John and Edward)  over the weekend, at a free outdoor concert in Northern Ireland.

Since winning X-Factor Joe’s attempts at achieving major Pop stardom have failed, but twins John and Edward keep going from strength to strength, and seem to be raking in the dough.

John and Edward aka Jedward

They will represent Ireland in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest and have revealed plans to front a Saturday morning kid’s show on CBBC over the summer.  It has also been reported that they have signed on to become the new faces of Coco Pops.

A source apparently disclosed to The Sun that “It really has spiralled downhill for Joe. You could blame Simon or his mentor Cheryl Cole, but if the public who voted for you lose interest there’s not much anyone can do.”

………………………….

I said from the very beginning that Joe was not ‘Pop star’ material. His voice and style is best suited to musical theatre and that is what he should focus on from now on. Mark my words musical theatre is the way forward Joe!

OK! MAGAZINE SET TO LAUNCH IN NIGERIA

Alexander Amosu

Apologies if some of you already know about this but I’ve only just come across this news.

The Voice reports that popular celebrity gossip magazine OK! will launch in Nigeria. According to columinist/influential industry figure Jasmine Dotiwala ’OK! Magazine Nigeria will be owned and operated by famed entrepreneur Alexander Amosu (never heard of him). It will be a monthly publication and the content will include news on internationally known Nigerian stars, local Nigerian stars,  African-American celebs and more’.

Alexander told Jasmine,

“Nigeria’s probably one of the most vibrant, affluent countries in Africa – a nation with this juxtaposition of poverty and immense wealth. Nigeria is a style leader for Africa that continues to shine despite hardships and negativity that try to mar its progress.

“I’m honoured to bring OK! Magazine to Nigeria and I am convinced that the publication will enjoy great success.”

He also told me about the endless opportunities for the magazine, which will enjoy sharing news of the world’s fast growing entertainment industry, from Nollywood stars, to the plethora of singing talent currently coming out of the country.

“Worldwide, there is love for what comes out of Nigeria, from the movies to the music. What better way to showcase this positivity and share it with the rest of the world?”

OK! Magazine Nigeria is set to launch in June 2011.

Best of luck Alexander.
