THROW BACK FOOTAGE OF THE DAY : THE SO SOLID CREW PERFORM AT THE BRIT AWARDS 2002

March 21, 2011 4 comments

As far as I am concerned this was a pretty ground breaking moment for the UK’s black music scene . I am still shocked that the Brit organisers acknowledged and allowed my beloved So Solid Crew to perform, because up until that point they were happy to pretend as if black acts didn’t exist. But now a group made up of largely young black males from South London was performing on stage in front of millions of viewers (including ‘Middle England’) on The Brits (of all shows) which was simply unheard of back then.

Those who are around my age group and have tuned in to the Brit Awards over the years will be aware of the blatant shenanigans that have taken place in the past when it comes to a particular type of artist. E.g. Craig David going on to have the biggest selling album (Born To Do It) in the country in 2000/01 and not winning a single award. It was an absolute travesty that I will never forget.

But back to So Solid. People tend to block out just how much they achieved (do the research if you don’t know) in a relatively short period of time.  And in my opinion they were also the last real musical movement in this country.

Anyway check out So Solid’s Brits performance below.

TUPAC CASTING CALL!!!

March 20, 2011 Leave a comment

Morgan Creek Productions and Skee.TV/Karmaloop.TV are excited to announce the online casting call for the highly anticipated motion picture “Tupac,” based on the life of the legendary icon Tupac Shakur, directed by Antoine Fuqua.

The casting call begins on Friday, March 18 and allows individuals who exemplify Tupac to upload their video audition to www.InSearchOfTupac.com.  Fans and entrants are encouraged to check the website often, as important announcements and additional opportunities will be unveiled during the course of the month-long audition.

“We are excited to partner with Morgan Creek on this innovative casting call,” said Scott “DJ Skee” Keeney, founder of Skee.TV.  “This audition process is a great example of utilizing today’s ever-evolving technology to reach fans and actors around the world to pay homage to a hip-hop legend.”

“Tupac” chronicles the life and legacy of Tupac Shakur, including his rise to superstardom as a hip hop artist and actor, as well as his imprisonment and prolific, controversial time at Death Row Records, where he was steeped in the East Coast /West Coast rap war.  “Tupac” will be directed by Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day,” “Tears of the Sun,” “Brooklyn’s Finest”). The film will be produced by James G. Robinson, David Robinson and LT Hutton, and executive produced by Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur.  The screenplay was written by Stephen J. Rivele, Christopher Wilkinson and Steve Bagatourian. Universal Pictures distributes in the United States and co-distributes with Morgan Creek International overseas.

“We’re looking for someone with the right mix of raw charm and charisma for the role,” says producer David Robinson. “At this point, we’re more concerned about finding someone with the ability to give their entire heart into the performance than just looks and personality.”

Over the course of the campaign, www.InSearchOfTupac.com will feature rare video footage and exclusive interviews from Tupac Shakur’s life as seen on the official website www.2pac.com.

UK FILM: ANUVAHOOD REVIEW

March 19, 2011 7 comments

Over a year ago actor/writer/director Adam Deacon tweeted that he was working diligently on his first film script (Anuvahood) and I was instantly intrigued. What sort of script would the star of Kidulthood and Adulthood produce, and more importantly would the end result just end up going straight to DVD?

Long before the cast and crew had been hired and long before the director screamed “QUIET ON SET PLEASE! ACTION!” Deacon’s supporters online were already hyping up Anuvahood like it was the second coming.

Now fast forward to March 2011 and after high expectations and a pretty impressive marketing/promotional campaign complete with a red carpet premiere in London’s West End, Anuvahood (Britain’s first “Urban”comedy) was finally released nationwide on the 18 March.

In the film Deacon plays K (real name Kenneth) whose sole purpose in life it seems is to act the damn FOOL on a daily basis while hanging out with his odd ball friends TJ (Jazzie Zonzolo), Lesoi (Michael Vu), Enrique (Ollie Barbieri) and Bookie (Femi Oyeniran) around his council estate, becoming a famous MC, and eating Fruitellas because “it’s a bad man sweet ya get me”.

But things take a turn for the worse, after K leaves his job at the supermarket (Laimsbury’s) and decides to sell weed for a living after his family lose nearly all their possessions to the bailiffs. This then leads to several comical encounters often involving the estate’s head drug dealer and bully boy Tyrone (Richie Campbell), and K learning some valuable lessons a long the way.

So did Anuvahood live up to the hype???

Those of you who are old enough to remember the ‘90s’ US film comedy Friday which starred Ice Cube and Chris Tucker will definitely see similarities between the two films.  It clearly inspired Deacon and there are  scenes in Anuvahood that mirror scenes in the 1995 comedy classic, which more or less makes it Friday UK.

However, I will say that Anuvahood was still entertaining with some laugh out loud moments, and Richie Campbell stands out as the psychotic Tyrone. I have watched Richie in a few TV dramas but hadn’t realised he was also such a good physical comic actor. And I’ve only just noticed his physique. I didn’t know he was built like that… mmmmmmm :)

But anyway… I digress…

In conclusion I will add that Anuvahood is a brash, bright, loud, over the top spoof geared towards the 15 – 21 year old demographic, who will flock to the cinemas and think it’s the funniest film they have seen to date.

Mad News Rating – I will give the film 7 out of 10 because it did succeed in making me laugh.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: UK BLOGGER MISS LALA TALKS “TEAM UK”

March 17, 2011 7 comments

I don’t shout “Team UK”, because it’s a fallacy!

As I have said many times before, I support good music. Just because you and I share the same colour passport, that does not mean that you have a right to my money. I will not be buying your music if I think it’s sh*t.  I will not be bullied or made to support music that is burning my ears. Music I believe to be soulless will not be getting my support.

Team UK exists for media outlets like The Sun, and they are on some Babylon business.  I’m not involved!!

I’ve seen how they showered praise on urban acts years before, and then in a split second railroaded those same urban acts to sell their crappy papers.  They do what they do to suit them, but because Team UK are so up their backsides, they will sell their souls to be apart of that machine.  A machine that doesn’t give a toss about them.  The machine can see that they have no sturdy foundation, so they are able to knock them off their post at any given time.  Then they will all stand around saying “What happened” or “A black man can’t catch a break!”

That’s your Team UK for you. FOOLS!
