Now the media is focused on Hip Hop videos and the “obsession” to have big buttocks . Today tabloid rag The Sun published a story about women taking chicken pills to boost the size of their backsides. The Sun reporter who wrote the article is about 15 years too late on this “revelation”. Old news!

Anyway saxophonist Yolanda Brown appeared as a guest presenter on the BBC’s Newsnight to investigate the obsession with big buttocks and the music industry.

DJ BANS VYBZ KARTEL’S MUSIC FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH

February 12, 2011 5 comments

Vybz Kartel - Before and After

It’s black history month in America and a leading New York club DJ has announced that he will not be playing any music by Vybz Kartel during this period, because of the Reggae star’s skin bleaching antics.

Irie Jam radio host/program director Dubb Master Chris recently told the Star newspaper,

“Black history month is a big deal and we as a people should take every opportunity to celebrate our heritage. I feel if I continue to play Vybz Kartel, an artist who is now very much known for bleaching his skin, it simply sends the wrong message to my young impressionable listeners.

I strongly believe bleaching is wrong, wrong, wrong! It’s a disgrace. It’s a slap in the face of our heritage, our ancestors and our god. This definitely sends the wrong message to children, I think it leads them to believe that some how, if they are dark complexion something is wrong with that. It erodes the concept that Black is beautiful.

Please understand that I have a lot of love and respect for Kartel’s music. I respect his enormous talent and his individuality. He is one of the great lyricists of our time however, at times I am disappointed in the direction he decides to take his audience even though that is his prerogative”

“Without a doubt kids are following his lead. Entertainers need to understand that the words they use are powerful. They influence their listeners, especially the younger ones. Artists have the power to start trends good or bad…remember that.

He called on other radio jocks who program reggae songs to “take a good look at the values they are reinforcing by playing an artist such as Kartel especially in these times.” He noted that the temporary ban on Kartel’s music specifically applies to radio play. The ban he said was a personal decision but noted that he had the full support of the Irie Jam Radio management and other jocks at the station.

Dubb Master Chris

Oh dear…. poor Kartel. I bet he’s sorry he jumped in to that vat of Domestos now.

I find it hilarious that this DJ has decided to ban Vybz’s records throughout February only because it’s black history month.  But come 1 March it’s business as usual!

If Vybz’s antics have outraged this Dubb Master Chris that much, then why doesn’t he ban his music permanently?

I’m sorry but I just can’t take his stance on this situation seriously.

RAPPER EVE TO BE HONOURED IN JAMAICA

February 11, 2011 4 comments

First the organisers of the Jamaican music awards ceremony EME announced that rapper Trina is going to be honoured and now it’s rapper Eve’s turn.

Click HERE if you missed my previous commentary/rant regarding their first announcement.

Check out extracts from the press release I received today.

Kingston, Jamaica: Hip-Hop rapper, actress and successful designer Eve will be one of three international stars including TRINA and Jamerican comedian Rayzor who are confirmed to perform at the glitzy Excellence in Music and Entertainment (EME) Awards, set to take place on Saturday, March 12, 2011 at The East Lawn of the historical Devon House site, Hope Road in Kingston, Jamaica.

The hip hop queen who in 2007 collaborated with Sean Paul on the reggae-tinged single “Give It To You,” came knocking on reggae’s door again in 2010, recording another successful collaboration with Dancehall Diva Lady Saw – “He’s at My House,” from Saw’s album “My Way.” The two female acts are expected to up the anti with a highly anticipated performance at the EME Awards in Kingston. It is the very first time they will perform their collaboration live and Saw can’t wait.

“I feel extremely excited about performing with Eve. We have been good friends for a while now. She loves Jamaica and is looking forward to performing with me at the EME Awards” Saw said.

Eve’s love affair with Jamaica was cemented from as far back as December 1999 when she joined Erykah Badu, Tracy Chapman, Jimmy Cliff, Toots Hibbert, Lauryn Hill, Queen Latifah and The Marley family at the beautiful James Bond Beach for a special performance at the ‘One Love – The Bob Marley All Star Tribute’ Concert that was filmed in Jamaica and later rebroadcast on TNT Network in the USA. Aside from performing at the EME Awards, Eve will be inducted as an “International Friend of Reggae” and will be recognised for her collaboration with Lady Saw which is currently blowing up in Jamaica and the rest of the Caribbean.

The 2011 Excellence in Music and Entertainment (EME) Awards will recognize the top reggae performers in approximately 30 award categories. Winners will be determined based on their performance on The Weekly Jamaica Music Countdown (Charts), votes via texts and votes at the website www.emeawards.com.

Again, I just don’t understand why US acts need to be honoured, just because they collaborated with a few Jamaican artists many moons ago and claim they “love Jamaica”.

Why not just scrap that random “international friend to Reggae” foolishness and solely focus on honouring HOMEGROWN talent!

MORGAN CREEK PRODUCTIONS ANNOUNCES START OF ‘TUPAC’ BIOPIC

February 11, 2011 3 comments

Principal photography is scheduled to begin in late Spring/early Summer on the biopic “TUPAC,”and is currently being cast.

The film chronicles the life and legacy of Tupac Shakur, including his rise to superstardom as a hip hop artist and actor, as well as his imprisonment and prolific, controversial time at Death Row Records, where he was steeped in the East coast/West coast rap war.

In her support of the upcoming biopic of her late son, Afeni Shakur-Davis said, “I am confident that Morgan Creek will stay true to the common goal we share of depicting Tupac’s life in a way that will allow the world to see the authenticity of his artistry, his hopes, and his life goals.“
Commented producer LT Hutton,”I am honored to be part of the process that is bringing his life and legacy to the big screen. I am thankful to Afeni Shakur for giving this project her blessing and to Morgan Creek for giving it the green light.”

“TUPAC” will be produced by James G. Robinson, David Robinson and LT Hutton, and executive produced by Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur. The screenplay was written by Steve Bagatourian, Stephen J. Rivele & Christopher Wilkinson. Universal Pictures distributes in North America and co-distributes with Morgan Creek International overseas.

[Thanks Ronke]

I hope this project doesn’t end up like the Christopher Wallace (Notorious BIG) biopic. which just glossed over his rise to Hip Hop stardom. And the portrayal of key individuals in his life were laughable at times.

But Afeni Shakur is going to be involved so I have a feeling that this biopic is going to be a good one.
